OPENING: Martha Crockett marched across the ivories as she belted out musical melodies to match our mood.
Edward Moulton led a "change of pace" song "You're a Grand Old Flag".
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: The meeting was opened by Pres. Bob
Wallace with a moment of silence for Howard Arman who passed away this week. A service for Howard will be held at our meeting location on June 20th, 1-4 pm. All are invited.
We followed Chuck Gulick as he led us in the Flag salute and long missing
Tom Slaughter gave a very long dissertation about his prayer and then presented his short prayer. Program Chairman
Daryal Gant and our speaker (and member) Lloyd Welch & his wife Irene
completed the head table along with Pres. Bob, of course. Guests included
Deputy Dan Connolly, a guest of the club and Mary Gant; our
Lt. Gov Joe Thompson; fledging author Don Mazen; Tom Trainer
guest of the club and Daryal Gant; Shirley DeGrey & Martha Crocket were introduced by their spouses. Three Terrific Kids from Palm Crest Elementary and their parents were introduced by
Pat Flynn who told of their accomplishments.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Pres Bob said that Bob Slattery was not doing well and is in the Gateway Home (see Frosty for info). Deputy Dan told us about the Golf Tourney to benefit the Sheriff's emergency preparedness center (info found elsewhere);
Diane DellaValle (caught with a mouth full of lunch), once again pitched the upcoming Jazz Festival at Glendale Kiwanis;
Anthony Portantino thanked all who helped out at the pet clinic where about 100 pets were shot up; Pat Anderson pitched the upcoming Chamber Mixer at St. George's Church and also said that hubby Phil was at home doing well and that he didn't need a bypass but instead got a valve replacement (give him a call, send a card);
Bachy Bachmayer gave his tireless weekly pitch for bucks for the Children's Hospital tubs on the tables;
Bill Watts presented a new idea for the newsletter: "do you want it mailed to you or do you want to get it off our web
site"; Lt. Gov. Joe Thompson presented us with a "total K day" badge for our
banner
The
bulletin is usually mailed by bulk mail instead of first class to
save money. However, often times the bulk mail is as much as
a week late. We need to
know if the majority of you want to read the bulletin on the web-site.
The bulletin will be mailed to the rest of you by first class
mail. If you can read the bulletin on the web page and do not
want it mailed to you, please notify Jeb Long by e-mail:
jeblong@earthlink.net.
Otherwise, your bulletin will be mailed to
you.
ANNIVERSARIES, BIRTHDAYS, HAPPY, SAD, BUSINESS ETC. BUCKS: Don Mazen had bucks for his commercial about the book he has written (199 pages) about the history of La Cañada;
Hal Crockett had bucks for Yosemite Valley and said that next week is hazardous waste disposal day at the Rose Bowl;
Frosty Boyd was happy that Deputy Dan was here and moved right in to a corny joke (as usual);
Mary Gant had happy bucks that Deputy Dan was here also;
Tom Slaughter (you remember him) had bucks to say he hopes to attend more frequently and also that his business has expanded and he has hired an employee skilled in digital photography;
Daryl Gant (I got lost on this one) said that wife Mary
goes to Tijuana every six months (to shop?) but this time she got turned back at the border?;
Deputy Dan (there's that name again) had happy bucks for the new signs that have arrived at the sheriff's station to promote more safety for school kids:
Sheila Cook put in bucks to tell us about her hubby who is a photographer and has a show of his works at Penelope's restaurant.
OH YES: The Pres said that everyone who didn't shake hands with the "Secret Greeter" who was
Ed Moulton (it was so secret even Ed didn't know about it) or didn't have their pin on were fined $1 for each offense.
50/50 RAFFLE: For a refreshing change, it was won by Tom
Gilfoy.
IT'S PROGRAM TIME: After a detailed introduction by Daryal
Gant, our own Lloyd Welch was presented as our featured speaker of the day who spoke on Cryptography and National Security. Lloyd has an impressive background besides a B.A. in Math and a PhD from Cal Tech. He was a consultant with the Pentagon and held "Top Secret" clearance. He has 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren. His tale of WWII war stories and secret shenanigans kept us wanting more. He said that the big word "cryptography " means code breaking. He explained that our Government doesn't always tell us what's really going on as it might reveal other secrets or codes that it has broken. The "traffic" of mail, cables, codes, etc. that increases rapidly is what triggers our National Security alert from yellow to red etc. That tells us that something is "in the works" by terrorist's or others. He could have gone on for another half hour and we could have listened to his interesting experiences for another half hour.
CLOSING: We "Hailed Kiwanis" led by Mr. Ed
PROCEEDS GO TO FUND A NEW EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS CENTER
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: "Am I Not Destroying my Enemies By Making Friends Of Them?"...... Abraham Lincoln
