OPENING:
What can we say about Shirley DeGrey other than we love to hear her play (the piano that is). Key Clubbers were everywhere but they didn't bring their song leader so we used "everyready" Ed Moulton who led us in the prelude to and then "God Bless America".
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Officers of the La Cañada High School Key Club;
Maressa Takahasi, President; Carrie Arboleda, Vice President; Andrew Kim, Treasurer; Albert Chen, Secretary, Mary Walsten, faculty advisor and of course
Ken Lowe, were all present at the head table. Andrew Kim gave the flag salute and Ken Lowe gave the invocation. He said they asked him to pray for them. Guests included
Tom Trainer, a guest of Daryal Gant's and our Club; Lt. Gov.
Joe Thompson; and Vernon Chase.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Low cost Dog & Cat Vaccination Clinic to be held on Thursday, June 5th, was announced by
Anthony Portantino (at the ball field next to the Barkley Community Center); Help! Help! Help! Was the cry of the day as
Paul Westmoreland & Joel Smith need help with the soap box derby, be there at 7 am Saturday if you don't have any assignment or call Joel NOW to help.
Carl Christensen needs help with the hamburger booth on Monday;
Clyde Hemphill needs help to man the Sunland-Tujunga
catering coach on Saturday; Joel Smith needs help on Friday at the St Francis parking structure at 3:30, I need help writing this paper, etc. etc. Can we do it all?? Of course we can cuz we're Kiwanians.
Paul Westmoreland told us of the progress of the membership program and also that we have over 65 entries in the Soap Box Derby this year and lots of help is needed as over half of the kids have never raced before.
Diane DellaValle urged all to sign up for the "Dine Around" program and said she has gotten a tremendous response to the program which occurs on May 31st. She also announced that the Glendale Kiwanis club is putting on their annual Jazz Festival on June 28th and that we can get half of the $20 ticket fee for selling tickets for our charity fund (This is a fun event by the way); Bachy Bachmayer made his weekly pitch for the kids at Children's hospital;
Daryal Gant told us of the next two upcoming programs.
HAPPY, SAD, ETC. BUCKS: President Bob Wallace started the ball rolling with a buck as he welcomed the Key Clubbers and the fact that he had the day off as pres;
Howard Backer put in bucks as he was happy Bob wasn't at the podium;
Jim Edwards put in 2 bucks as he too was happy Bob wasn't in his usual roost;
Ed Moulton put in a sad buck as his wife fell and is in great pain and he too isn't doing well as he has to do all the wifely chores. He can now cook scrambled eggs and oatmeal (but 3 times a day?);
George Lutes put in happy and sad bucks, happy to play golf but then got drenched in the rain. He decided to put his golf glove in the microwave to dry and showed us the terrible shrinking results BUT he was happy that he didn't put his shoes in there too;
Frosty Boyd was happy that he just got back from a great river boat trip on the Columbia River which of course led to a boat joke;
Pat Anderson put in a happy buck as hubby Phil's operation was finally scheduled next Tuesday; Lt. Gov. Joe Thompson put in a buck each for the two great tennis players, from the Key Club, that he teaches tennis to.
50/50 RAFFLE: Won by Jim Edwards
SECRET GREETER: If you missed shaking hands with any Key Club member you coughed up a buck.
THE PROGRAM: Key Clubbers from La Cañada High took over the meeting and the program. Their past president presented a long list of the clubs accomplishments during the last year. The Club has accumulated over 2,000 hours of community service and at the same time has grown over 30% and now has a whopping 180 members (who is their membership chairman?). A few of their projects: "Adopt-A-Meal"; every so often they they spend a Friday night serving tacos, beans, nachos and dessert at the Union Station Foundation for 60 people. They pay for the food by doing fundraisers like car washes etc.; They were a fantastic help with the Soap Box Derby; they cooked and served Thanksgiving dinner to the needy, etc. etc. What a great group of young adults. All the Key Club members in attendance (about 12) were introduced by their president
Maressa Takahasi. They also told us that their motto this year was
B.U.I.L.D: Beautify Earth, Uplift less fortunate, Interact with the elderly, Lend a hand with the disabled,
Devote time to youth. They preformed a skit that was fun and the highlight was two fantastic piano solo's by
Carrie Arboleda who has been playing since she was 5 years old. After that all the Key Clubber's lined up for 3 different cheers. Our hat's off to our Key Clubbers.
CLOSING: Once Again Ed Moulton led us in "Hail Kiwanis".
Membership Conference Status:
The club is making progress in its membership initiative. However, we need to ramp-up our efforts significantly to produce the major increases that we are shooting for (6 new members per team). Remember: Membership is the responsibility of each and every member. The key is to DO
SOMETHING--invite guests! Here are results since March 1, by team.
