La CañadaN OF THE YEAR EDITION
GAYLORD HAMMERWOLD

Gaylord Hammerwold
OPENING:
How does it go? "The Best Laid Plans of Mice & men"?
Well anyhow it seems that everyone was told our meeting started at
11:30, except the caterer. Which meant that a huge crowd showed up
for The La Canadian of The Year Award program, at 11:30 a.m.
except the food didn't arrive until 20 minutes later. But no
matter this jovial crowd, mostly of volunteer community workers,
Kiwanians, and past LC of the Year Award winners, managed to
jabber with each other to fill the void. Unfortunately we had a
"chow line" to wait in for our food but everybody was
happy. Shirley DeGrey helped sooth the hungry crowd with
her piano rhythms. As our Master of Ceremonies, Jerry Healy, was
so quick to quirk, Shirley must have got her training as a Saloon
Piano Player. Shirley shot back that she always wanted to pound
the ivories in a saloon but her parents wouldn't let her. Ed
Moulton back in great form pulled us through the prelude to
and then "God Bless America".
President Elect Jim Ackland did double duty by
praising our Flag as he led us in the Salute and also by giving
the invocation. Many guests including all members of our City
Council and our City Manager, representatives from the Sheriff's
Dept, Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce, an Inter-club from our
sister A.M. Kiwanis club, and just about everybody else of
importance including representatives of our all areas of
government from Assemblyman to Senator. Even Louie Juarez
from Von's and his wife Eleanor were there.

Blues Brothers Gaylord and Louie Juarez
Paul
Westmoreland managed to introduce a guest of the club Frank
VanLanDingham (is that an Irish name? another name to drive my
"spell check" crazy).
Pres Bob Wallace then turned the meeting over to our MC Jerry
Healy who mentioned that Gaylord Hammerwold (as his
Daddy used to say) was just like Horse Pucky, "he's all over
the place". He started to sing a song to the tune of "if
I had a Hammer (Wold) but wasn't doing to well so he went on to
other things. Dick DeGrey and Carl Christensen were
the co-chairs of this event and were a show all to themselves.
They reiterated the many, many community events, programs, bar
mitzvahs, etc, that Gaylord had a hand in. As they did this they
changed hats explaining that Gaylord was a man who wore many hats.
A tribute was paid to Gaylord by Bob Neilsen (LCFTRA
President) , Marlys Marsteller, Kim Lievense (JPL), and Terry
Walker (Chamber of Commerce President).
Presentations of personal citations from all leaders of City and
State Government were then individually given to Gaylord
who is truly a unique and modest man. Gaylord, the man who never
sleeps, was then given an opportunity to respond and said that all
these awards were really awarded to all the workers in the
community who kept him going.

All I
can say is never in the history of La Cañada has one person given
so much to so many for so long, without thought of personal
notoriety or gain, as Gaylord Hammerwold. He will be a most
difficult act to follow.
Even though we didn't have "happy bucks' Gaylord
popped in $40 for using the Kiwanis bar-b-que to cook the tri-tip
roasts.
This is the type of program that you had to be there to
appreciate.
