OPENING: Martha Crockett magically mastered the keyboard to provide melodious music for the gathered Kiwanians and Guests. The Key Club of Flintridge Prep "took over" the club and 6 new and outgoing officers put us "through our paces". There was no opening song but outgoing President John Thomas told us that the Key Club followed "Roberts Rules Of Order" and that the meeting began at 12:33 pm. He then led us in the salute to our Flag. Maria Sanchez gave a lovely invocation.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Using the roving mike (it works!?) Past Pres Pat Anderson on behalf of Joel Smith and the nominating committee, announced the slate of officers for the 2003-2004 Kiwanis year:

President - Jim Ackland

Prez-Elect - Daryal Gant
Vice Pres - Sheila Cook
Secretary - Doris Horwith
Treasurer - Howard Backer

Directors: Diane DellaValle,   Clyde Hemphill,
                     Paul Westmoreland,  Bill Watts

A formal vote on these nominations will be held on May 14th.

Other announcements: " M. 2 hats" Paul Westmoreland told of the success of the Soap Box Derby forum held at the Sport Chalet last week and how with the sponsorship of Home Depot this years Derby should be a big one. He then told us of the progress of our Membership Campaign. Carl Christensen reminded all that next week is The La Cañadan of the Year program and you should reserve in advance if you are bringing a guest. Also it starts at 11:30; upcoming programs were announced by Daryal Gant; Key Clubber Maria Sanchez asked all to turn out for the Cancer Walk at 11 a.m Sunday with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society, last year they raised more than $7000 and all ages are invited.

THE PROGRAM: The Key Clubbers provided a program which outlined their past accomplishments and their new projects including "Meals on Wheels", Union Station help with serving, The Lords Mission where they would buy and serve dinners, and several other works in progress. They will also cook and serve Thanksgiving Dinner for the needy. It is amazing what this club with over 100 members can accomplish. After that they "played a game" which involved fining, table by table, members who couldn't answer Kiwanis related questions like who was the first president of a Key Club.. Wow! Needless to say they picked up some fines but it was fun. They ended with a "Key Club Cheer".

50/50 RAFFLE: Won by Barry Riedel (who must have pre-arranged to split it with the Gants)

KIWANIS DOUBLE CLUB CHARTERING DINNER DANCE: A great turn out by our club at this history making event as 18 of us were personally thanked by Mr. Inter-Club Jim Ackland who was proud that we finally "beat out" the A.M. club with numbers attending. A great and humorous speech was given by International Pres "Ito" who also wound up signing "La Bamba". Everybody was introduced including each member of the new clubs and an almost "free for all" was in progress by the audience to join up as a Charter member of these two clubs. (It should have been announced, "Is there anyone who has not been introduced, please stand up!).

UPCOMING PROGRAMS:

                     Hammerwold
  • May 14th: 35 Women with instruments will perform
