OPENING: Shirley DeGrey
made the piano keys say tunes that tantalized terrific Kiwanians as they mobilized for lunch. Jack Dawson
led the song (under the watchful eye of Ed Moulton who has a bad cold) as we proclaimed "America The Beautiful".
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Helping us Salute our Flag was Glen Pettit
followed by Don Davidson who led us in the invocation.
Pres Bob, Dr. Charles & Jeanne Broberg & Joel Smith
graced the head table. City Councilman Greg Brown introduced
Megan Broberg; Jim Edwards presented Chamber of Commerce President and guest of the
Club, Terry Walker, and then had us greet long time missing member
Brian Hull who then introduced his wife Carol. We welcomed back
Hal Thomas who introduced his wife of 54 years, Julia; Key Club members
Christine Dui & Jean Benjauthrtt(?) were introduced by
Ken Lowe; Elizabeth Calciano Georgeon introduced Becky & Chuck Gelhaar
and also told us of a La Cañada Beautiful Event of beautiful backyards on May 10th for only $5;
Bill Watts introduced his marriage partner & business partner,
Margaret; Bea Cirar's guest was not on the guest roster, somebody Shaw?
Ed Moulton (with voice almost gone) introduced Jeff Bolosan
of the Sport Chalet who is a big help with the Soap Box Derby cars;
Ken Crockett & Dick DeGrey introduced their spouses and our key piano pounders, Martha & Shirley. In spite of his bad cold Ed Mouton managed to help us "Hi Neighbor" our guests.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Pres Bob once again announced that May 14th is the day we will nominate new officers etc. and urged any suggestions to be given to Joel Smith
who heads up the nominating committee; Barry Riedel told us of the last travelogue of the season coming up on Scandinavia, the
Flintridge Prep Singers will perform and prospective new members are free;
Pat Anderson tried to auction of a package of 2 toner cartridges but no one bid as they didn't know if they fit their fax, if you want to bid ,look at your fax and see if it is a Cannon C150 or C180 and you can get a good deal;
Diane DellaValle was happy that 14 members have signed up for the dual club chartering and dinner dance at the Glendale Hilton on April 28th and said that half of those attending are not bringing their significant other (is that a hint?);
Bachy Bachmayer asked for funds for the Children's Hospital;
Paul Westmoreland (once again wearing two hats) plugged ads for the Soap Box Derby program and then announced the latest statistics of the membership campaign;
Carl Christensen said that two weeks from today (May 7th) is the La Cañadan of the year program and a sign up sheet was passed around as we need to know how many will attend;
Daryal Gant announced upcoming programs; Ed Moulton needs volunteers to help collect papers at 7:45 am at 3 schools, can you help?
HAPPY, SAD, WHATEVER & BIRTHDAY & ANNIVERSARY BUCKS: All funds were collected by one of our new Sgt of Arms
Sookie Mathews. Starting off was Ken Lowe who dropped in $5 for his birthday as that's all it was worth to him;
Carl Gieseke however became a member of the Century Club for his birthday;
Bill Watts celebrated his 44th wedding anniversary, his wife
Margaret's birthday (on the same day) and his Grandson Billy's 3rd birthday which was today and dropped in $50;
Ed Moulton put in $5 for what he called an anticlimactic event for his Grandson's wedding (as they have been living together for 5 years);
Don Corbett put in a $10 spot to celebrate the birth of his twin daughters 37 years ago;
Clyde Hemphill put in bucks for the upcoming clinic at the Sport Chalet for the Soap Box Derby cars; Harold Arman put in two bucks for
Melinda Thompson & Bill Scherkey being here again together which he did last week but didn't have the $2. I think he owes another $2 for that don't you?
Jeanne Broberg had happy bucks as her daughter Megan had been taking care of their house for them & it's still there, so she's letting her live in the basement?;
Dr. Charles Broberg said celebrating his birthday was worth a million dollars but all he could afford was $20;
Frosty Boyd had happy bucks for many things but told that same horse joke (for the 3rd time) and needs fresh material;
Brian Hull was happy the Broberg's were here and I think joined the Century Club;
Carl Christenson pledged bucks for his newest Granddaughter.
SECRET GREETER: Was not well Ed Moulton
50/50 RAFFLE:
Taking turns with the winning Gant's was Diane DellaValle
THE PROGRAM: Dr. Charles
& Jeanne Broberg were introduced by Joel Smith.

Joel Smith
Introducing Dr Charles and Jeanne Broberg.
Having just returned from a nearly 2 year mission to Kiev,
Ukraine, the Broberg's are long time La Cañada residents and community workers. They presented a slide presentation that detailed the 10 students that were awarded $100 each from the funds sent from our club. $100 is a lot of money in Kiev where a loaf of bread costs 17 cents and the students were quite thankful for our gift. Each $100 was presented privately to each student and they were asked to keep it confidential. Several thank you letters to Kiwanians were read to us. Kiev is a modern city that was founded in the 6th Century (Moscow was founded in the 12th Century). They told of waking up in the morning to Communist rallies outside their apartment in the mornings. This was a return trip to Russia for Dr. Charles who was there as a student in 1959 when he was a student of Russian language at USC. They mentioned that prescriptions are not needed for drugs, you can just buy what you want which sounds scary. Many questions followed their presentation.
