OPENING: Martha majestically marauded with determined intensity the musical keyboard that mystifies those less talented as she parlayed tune after tune into an intense musical presentation for Kiwanians as they munched on their noon repast.  The talented leadership of Ed Moulton portrayed with purpose the living legend of "God Bless America".

HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Don Davidson proudly led the Flag Salute to this great country of ours; Jim Ackland offered our invocation; Pres Bob Wallace, Daryal Gant & our speaker Jeff Wilson filled out the head table. Guests were Lloyd Welch, (of Daryal Gant), Karl Johnson's guest was Lita Meave, and guests for the last time were Sookie Mathews & Jeannine Scheinhorn. All were welcomed with "Hi Neighbor".

INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBERS: Subbing for Paul Westmoreland, Daryal Gant inducted two new members: Dr. Jeannine Scheinhorn (sponsor Ed Moulton) and local Realtor Sookie Mathews (sponsor Diane DellaValle). A most dignified and meaningful induction was topped off with orchids for the ladies. The only thing that was missing was Howard Backer to give them the bill. This of course was followed by "You're In Kiwanis now"

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Pres Bob made the first announcement about our Annual Meeting on May 14th where we will have an election of officers. Any suggestions for officers should be given to Joel Smith who heads the nominating committee. Barry Riedel announced our last travelogue of the season on Scandinavia; Diane DellaValle plugged the upcoming Dinner Dance for the chartering of two new clubs, it will be April 28th at the Glendale Hilton, with the cost of $50 per head added to you bill if you will sign up now. Joel Smith told of job descriptions for the upcoming Soap Box Derby, see him now to volunteer. Karl Johnson told of receiving another check for over $91 for used printer cartridges and reminded us to bring in used eyeglasses and pull-tabs off aluminum cans. Pat Anderson reminded all of the Thursday CofC mixer at the Antique House, Clyde Hemphill said that copies of new member orientation were available at the front table (and also he told me that he got his paper early except it was blank on one side, is that censorship or what?); Daryal Gant told of upcoming programs, Bachy Bachmayer said to fill the table pots for the Children's Hospital; Jim Ackland told of a 12:45 am phone call from the AM Club who said they would once again have a bigger turn out at the upcoming Dinner Dance then us.

SECRET GREETER: "Mr. Children's Hospital" Bachy Bachmayer.

HAPPY, SAD, & OTHER STUFF BUCKS: Karl Johnson popped in bucks as he was happy to (finally) get rid of the Sgt of Arms job; Jack Dawson celebrated his wedding anniversary by joining the Century Club followed by Joel Smith who did the same thing; Barry Riedel dropped a fiver as he was happy to have filed his taxes yesterday; Anthony Portantino had happy and sad bucks, happy he just came back from Hawaii but sad that his wife developed Gall Bladder trouble on the way back and is now having it removed. Frosty Boyd said he was happy to have participated in his radio club's work at the Shrine Circus which of course developed a circus joke; brand new member Sookie Mathews dropped in a twenty as she was happy to be a new member which was followed by Jeannine Scheinhorn who was also happy to belong to Kiwanis and Ed Moulton put in bucks as he was happy that Jeannine was a member also. Clyde Hemphill put in a buck as he was happy that Jack Dawson was the Les Tupper Award Winner; Hal Arman put in bucks as he was happy to see Bill Scherkey & Melinda Thompson back, both at the same time, once again.

50/50 RAFFLE: Won by Mary Gant (who takes turns winning with hubby Daryal)

PROGRAM: Daryal Gant introduced our speaker Jeff Wilson from the Western States Petroleum Association. Jeff is a grad of the University of California, Santa Barbara and has had several jobs while at school including a "hotshot" fire fighter. Jeff asked several questions of the audience and those who gave up the right answer were awarded a Swiss army knife and a ball cap. He presented a show & tell slide presentation and we learned some interesting facts about gas prices. California is third in gas consumption behind Russia & Japan (hard to believe) and we have the cleanest gas in the U.S. Over 29% of the cost of our gas is taxes, the third highest in the nation. Crude oil prices have more than doubled this year and they make up 49% of the cost of gas. Our demand for gas is 2 to 4 times the growth in our refining capability. Adjusted for inflation, gas prices are the lowest in 20 years.

Speaker Jeff Wilson
