OPENING: Shirley DeGrey made the 88 behave during lunch, and then Ed Moulton led us in God Bless America, opening, once again, with the so very appropriate prelude.
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Mary Gant led us in the salute to our Flag and
Jim Reynolds gave a beautiful invocation. Our Program Chairman Daryal Gant
joined Jack and Barbara Dawson on the other side of
President Bob. Bill Scherkey introduced our newest member in training,
Jeannine Scheinhorn, an ophthalmologist. Bea Cirar brought TWO guests
Zar Sarkarian and Thelma Allen. (Hooray for the Good Guys; Foothill League).
Bob Slattery introduced his guest, Vernon Chase. Ken Lowe
introduced Nithia Kishnan, Past President of LCHS Key Club and current student at Berkeley.
Dick DeGrey needlessly introduced Shirley, Barbara
Dawson, our guest and here to give the Program with husband Jack, rounded out the guests for the day. We Sang "Hi" to our new neighbors, tested the strength of our silverware, and got on with announcements.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Paul Westmoreland asked for more help with the Soapbox Derby.
Barry Riedel told us that we would be entertained by The
"Unnamed" Barber Shop Quartet before we leave for India on Saturday, March 29, 2003. Be at the Flintridge Prep Dock by 7:00PM to catch the music.
Mary Gant painted an irresistible picture of our Wine Dinner to be held Thursday, April 3, at Brookside Country Club. Please attend. Not only will it be an evening of fun, food, and fine wine, but also it will help our kids.
Clyde Hemphill needs more people for Total K Day to be held Saturday, March 29, 2003, at the Lanterman House.
Jim Ackland happily announced that three more members may take off the red dot of shame, having attended an Interclub. Your next chance is April 1, and that's no joke. (You know who you are).
Daryal Gant reminded us of two upcoming programs, listed below, pointing out that both are excellent bait for guests.
Bachy Bachmayer suggested that we add coins or dollars to the plastic containers on our tables to help the children in Children's Hospital.
Karl Johnson asked for eyeglasses, which will be donated, to people who can't afford them.
Doris Horwith encouraged everyone to attend our Wine Dinner, enticing anyone who might not be already convinced that she is donating a weekend in their condo on Mandolay Bay in Oxnard to the Silent Auction.
Dick DeGrey commended all ten gentlemen who showed up to chauffeur
Gaylord Hammerwold, our La Canadian of the Year.
HAPPY, SAD & OTHER BUCKS: Sighting our diminishing treasury,
Bob Wallace reminded Diane DellaValle that she had recently had a birthday. She couched up $62, one for each grateful year.
Doris Horwith joined the Century Club. Ed Moulton turned
87, sweetened the treasury plus $10 to celebrate the arrival of a new great grandchild.
Chuck Gulick joined the Century Club because he and his wife just celebrated 20 happy years.
Bob Martin was the Secret Greeter and got the ball rolling by donating a buck because he didn't shake his own hand.
Harold Backer threw in $5 for missing two weeks and a new great granddaughter.
Clyde Hemphill added money because his wife is touring Australia and New Zealand (What was that?)
Paul Westmoreland and Bachy Bachmayer added dollars for missing the palm press.
Doctor Bill Pickering joined the Century Club because he had just finished a wonderful trip to his homeland, New Zealand.
Frosty paid to make us laugh. Mary Gant and Jim Reynolds joined the fun.
Daryal Gant thanked George Lutz, Doris Horwith
told about her grandson's note. Joel Smith paid to announce that his Membership (Team) Big Dogs is tied with
Ed Moulton (individually). Karl Johnson gave us a happy buck for winning in Vegas.
Zar Sarkarian added $5 for being happy to be with us today.
50/50 RAFFLE: Bill Pickering won the drawing.
PROGRAM: Jack and Barbara Dawson guided us across the Northwest Passage as we joined the Lewis and Clark Expedition and traveled with them all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was so poignant we almost had sore feet.
CLOSING: Ed led us as we sang our way out, fortified by a great meeting.
