Bill Watts, Editor

OPENING: Martha mesmerized marauding Kiwanians with her marvelous music manufactured at the "88's".
Moulton (Mr. Ed, Mr. K, etc) motioned motivated Kiwanians through a most appropriate prelude ("While the storm clouds gather far across the sea, let us swear our allegiance to a land that's free, let us all be grateful for a land so fair, as we raise our voices in a solemn prayer") and then the composition of "God Bless America".
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Delivered from the floor was our flag salute, which referenced the above prelude as most fitting for our time, by
Jim Edwards. Howard Backer gave a computer-generated invocation followed by the real thing. Program Chairman
Daryal Gant, our speaker Louis Friedman, and Joel Smith
filled out the head table. Introduced by Pres Bob was
Lt. Gov. Joe Thompson; having 2 guests without a mike, Paul Westmoreland
had to again introduce his guests, Todd Reynolds &
Larry Dumas; a guest of Harold Arman was Barbara
Hanson, animal control officer for LC; Jeb Long presented
Jim Stevens a JPLer; Mary Gant (subbing for Pat
Anderson), introduced Katherine & Phil Markgraf; "drill 'em"
Don Corbett's guests were Doug & Adriene Morgan; overlooked in the intros were
Shirley DeGrey & Martha Crockett. Proud of his Key Club members was
Ken Lowe who told of the awards that the LCHS Key Club had won at their recent convention of over 2000. He had the new and past Key Club presidents,
Nicole Arboien & Mareisa Takahashi explain the awards.
Pat Flynn introduced "Terrific Kids" from Palm Crest elementary and their parents. "Hi Neighbor" (take 2 in B Flat) was rendered by the group.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: First in line was
Clyde Hemphill who told us of 9 projects we will be doing on
"Total K Day", March 29th from 8 a.m. to Noon; Bachy Bachmayer asked us to fill the pots for the Children's Hospital; Mr. Interclub
Jim Ackland asked for 2 more bodies for the Highland Park interclub at noon on March 20th at the Hilton and the Glendale inter-club at Clancy's on March 25th.
Paul Westmoreland touted the Soap Box Derby on May 24th and flyers were on the table to register. Home Depot will sponsor 16 new cars so this will be a big event; he also told of our progress with the "membership conference" and had all league presidents tell of their progress;
Barry Riedel said to not forget the upcoming travelogue on India as we will also have a barbershop quartet and you can give free tickets to prospective members;
Joan Peters said "how many Kiwanians does it take to make a successful event?" the answer 100%. Therefore 100% participation is needed for the April 3rd Wine dinner at Brookside, its $75 with not only a great dinner & fine wines but also $25 is deductible, Reserve NOW!
Eileen Ferber told us of the Family Emergency Preparedness meeting set for March 29th, and again pitched the Wine Dinner;
Daryal Gant told of future programs.
HAPPY, SAD, GLAD ETC. BUCKS: Didn't happen with the exception that
Frosty Boyd was allowed to tell a bad joke that should have cost him a fiver. There were no fines and no secret greater so our treasury is dwindling.
50/50 RAFFLE: Won by Bill Watts who is taking next week off.
PROGRAM: Introduced by Daryal Gant was Louis Friedman, executive director of the Planetary Society, a non-profit organization. His show & tell slide presentation was to say the least "out of this world". Exploring new worlds, seeking other life. Where are we going? Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto, you name it; we're on our way. We've discovered 86 planets outside our solar system. In the year 2004 there will be 5 spacecraft arriving at Mars. Are we alone? Or is their extraterrestrial life out there? We are not alone in our exploration as the Europeans and Japanese are also hard at it. A very interesting program and a great magazine called the Planetary Report were available for all.
