The
La Kawañian
March
12, 2003
Bill Watts, Editor
www.sparkywatts01@cs.com
OPENING:
Shirley shimmered as she seduced the piano keys into sumptuous music to entertain super Kiwanians. "Yea Team" membership member
Moulton (Mr. Ed, Mr. K etc) meaningfully manipulated us through "God Bless America".
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: The Salute to our Flag was led by
Bill Watts followed by an invocation delivered with a little humor by
Phil Anderson. The Pres, program chairman Daryal
Gant, our speaker Melissa Patton, and Bob Martin rounded out the head table. Guests included
Dr. Jeannine Scheinhorn, local ophthalmologist, who was a guest of
Ed Moulton who announced that she has filed an application for membership (Yea team!),
Jerry Martin was a guest of Dick De Grey and Jerry was asked by the Pres to introduce
Shirley De Grey. Giving all a chance to express their emotions, a rousing chorus of "Hi Neighbor" followed.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Pres Bob asked PP Pat Anderson up to the mike and presented her with banner patches that the club won under her fantastic leadership last year. She thanked the members for their support and hard work. Also presented to our Key Club attendees was a patch for their great work last year;
Daryal Gant discussed our membership program (which I guess is now called our "membership conference"), in the absence of membership chairman
Paul Westmoreland. Daryal a displayed the "score card" for the program and reiterated that we only have a few months left to accomplish our goals, he went on to say that we should figure out ways to make our efforts Fun, Fun, Fun. He made a big display by asking
Ed Moulton to come forward. Daryal & Ed then made a public bet: at the end of the season: the one who had fewer members would join the Century Club on behalf of the other.
Daryal suggested other members to make bets or other fun things to add a little pizzazz to the competition. "Get a little crazy";
Pres Bob told us how important it was to support the April 3rd wine dinner at Brookside (ed note: why isn't this dinner advertised in the newspapers as other wine dinners for a good cause are?); the "funds for Kiev" program was reported on by
Joel Smith who said $975 was raised and sent to the Brobergs for their distribution where needed, he also said its only 60 days to the Soap Box Derby and he needs volunteers, he also plugged the April 3rd wine dinner;
Eileen Ferber gave a sign-up form to all in attendance for the Wine Dinner and expounded how necessary it is to sign up now or we lose our deposit;
Pat Anderson told us of the upcoming Chamber Mixer on March 20th at La Cañada High School with entertainment featuring "the artistry of student performances", with catering by Arbor Crest;
Jim Ackland learned at the District Governors lunch on Sunday that 2 new clubs will be joining our district . He also announced the next 2 inter-clubs on March 20th at noon in Highland Park, and March 25th at Jewel City (5:45 pm). Both inter-clubs will car pool from the city parking lot next to the Church of The Lighted Window; he also said that he was a big spender by buying his membership team breakfast and of course they all had steak and eggs;
Pat Flynn read a letter from "Terrific Kid" Katlin Fueling thanking us for making her a Terrific Kid and he also thanked
Pat Anderson for taking care of the Terrific Kids last week while he was being carved upon; Courageous
Clyde Hemphill made 2 short announcements, one about total K day on March 29h and the other plugging the April 3rd wine dinner; Daryal Gant told us of future programs;
Bachy Bachmayer said to fill the pots for the Children's Hospital;
Ed Moulton said to give 2 tickets to the next travelogue to prospective members so they can see one of the many projects we do and it's a good chance to solidify their desire to join (as approved by the board).
HAPPY, SAD, ANNIVERSARIES, & OTHER BUCKS: The "dynamic duo" of Past Presidents
Pat & Phil Anderson were prompted by the Pres to reveal their Wedding Anniversary and Phil proclaimed that they would join the Century Club;
Jim Reynolds was looking for the owner of sunglasses that
Mary Gant quickly claimed and put up bucks, Frosty Boyd
put up a buck for a "pious" joke. Jim Edwards dropped in a happy and sad buck, happy for the breakfast that Jim Ackland bought him but sad because he would not buy the wine,
Dick De Grey reported on the health of Hal Thomas and said that he can now make 10 trips across his living room with the aid of a walker and is doing well, Bill Watts gave a sad buck as the A.M. club had 28 members at the Governors lunch and we had only 24.
SECRET GREETER: Is still a secret
50/50 RAFFLE: Won by our hard working secretary Doris Horwith
PROGRAM: Introduced by our program chairman Daryal Gant was
Melissa Patton a dedicated Lanterman House volunteer who holds a masters degree in Art History from USC. Melissa did a slide presentation of the History of La Cañada from the first Indians to the present and spoke the entire 1/2 hour without any notes. It was really interesting to see those slides of our past residents and learn more about where we reside and who was here before us.
CLOSING: "Mr. Ed" had us "Hail Kiwanis"
DISTRICT GOVENORS LUNCH: Last Sunday 24 members of our club joined the 114 others at the La Cañada Country Club for lunch, which was surprisingly good (do they have a new chef?). Despite
Jim Ackland's efforts, the A.M. Club had 4 more members in attendance then we did (YOU should have been there). It was a fun luncheon and the DG is a great speaker. He asked, "Do you know the difference between a Kiwanis member and a Kiwanian?" He answered that a Kiwanis member is just that, someone who attends now and then, pays their dues, but basically doesn't participate in the club or community, however, a Kiwanian is a club member who actively attends and participates in as many things as he can. Ask yourself, "Which one are you?"
