The
La Kawañian
February 19,2003
Bill Watts, Editor
www.sparkywatts@cs.com
OPENING: An overflow crowd was in attendance to hear the melodies of Martha Crockett & view the enthusiastic leadership of Ed Moulton as we belted out a rousing rendition of "God Bless America".
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Our Flag Salute was led by Jim Reynolds followed by the invocation of
Glen Pettit. On the other side of Pres Bob were Mayor Dave
Spence, our speaker Congressman Dreier, Councilman Steve Del Guercio, &
Councilman Anthony Portantino. Also in the audience were Councilman Jerry
Martin, City Manager Jerry Fulwood, 11 members of the LCF Chamber of Commerce including its
President Terry Walker, 7 members of the Montrose Chamber, a couple of members of the La Crescenta Chamber and about 45 other guests including staff members of the Congressman. Also filling up the room were many Kiwanian's who we don't see often enough.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Past Pres Pat (PPP) Anderson was first in line to remind all of the Chamber mixer tomorrow night at Calif. Water Sports in La Crescenta.

Daryal Gant told us of upcoming programs,
Barry Riedel reminded all of the next Kiwanis Travelogue, Joel Smith
made a pitch again for "dollars for scholars" in Kiev. Eileen Ferber reminded all of the April 3rd Kiwanis Foundation dinner at Brookside country club (did you get your invitation in the mail?). Send checks to
Eileen made payable to Kiwanis Foundation. Pres Bob would like all to attend the Sunday, March 9th District Governor's luncheon at the LCF Country Club (let's turn out more members than the A.M. club).
HAPPY, SAD, BUSINESS OR WHATEVER BUCKS: In the interest of time these were eliminated but only after Frosty Boyd got his in with a joke-OOPS!
50/50 RAFFLE: Won by the wife of "Mr. Lucky" Mary Gant
OUR PROGRAM: Started out with Pres Bob turning the mike over to
Mayor Dave Spence who introduced just about everybody that was a big wig, including the
Congressman's Mother & Stepfather, Joyce & Tom Hagood. The Mayor gave a humorous introduction to
Congressman Dreier, which was only outdone by the humor of the Congressman himself.
After several humorous stories the Congressman told us what's happening in Washington and also spoke of our possible war with Iraq. It was an enjoyable speech that was followed by a standing ovation and a short time for questions.

"A BOLD NEW MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM"
By this time (hopefully), most members have received their new membership initiative materials. The materials specify the conference structure and rules. All members are on a team.
Team members are reminded of the rule that they are to pick a team captain and a team name, and then provide that information to their league president by March 1.
There are club brochures "Welcome to the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada" for you to give to guests who are prospective members. They are usually kept at the sign-in table. We've ordered more.
Start working on your prospects list now! Invite!
Remember, lunch costs for prospective members (guests of the club) are paid by the club. (Yes, there really is such a thing as a free lunch!)
The best deal in town is a "spouse membership." There is no initiation fee and spouses pay only for monthly dues and lunches eaten. (How about your own spouse or someone else's?)
Our ambitious initiative will be successful, but it will require the active participation of all members. Remember our slogan "Shoot For The Stars!" (Reach out for bright objects).
If you've got a question call "Mr. Bold New Initiative" Daryal Gant at
(818-248-7664).
Board Meetings are the lst Thursday of the Month at Cal-Fed, 7 p.m.
District Council Meetings are the 3rd Monday of the month at Verdugo Hills Hospital cafeteria - 7 p.m.
