OPENING: On this cold & rainy day Shirley DeGrey warmed us up with her "hot" piano
Music. "Mr. K" Ed Moulton nearly stunned us with his bright red sport coat and American Flag tie as he led us in the "Battle Hymn Of The Republic".
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Although Jim Ackland gave the Flag Salute he relinquished his seat at the head table to
Shirley DeGrey who joined Dick as he presented a patriotic reading and then the invocation.
Pres Bob, Daryal Gant, Joel Smith & Clyde Hemphill
were squeezed together on the other side of the head table. Guests included
Lt. Gov. Joe Thompson, Bruce Campbell, a guest of Jim Reynolds,
Pat Flynn introduced his wife of 49 1/2 years aahh, oh yes,
Joyce. Jeb Long introduced his fiancee‚ Marilyn
Pieroni; Ken Lowe introduced a Key Clubber Katie Freeberg,
Dick DeGrey said hello to wife Shirley, and all were welcome by a rousing "Hi Neighbor".
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Pat Anderson urged all to attend the candidates forum tonight and praised
Jim Reynolds for helping the Club win the "honorable mention" award for the best multiple programs of a club of our size by his "write ups" to district. (There were a lot of competitors for this award).
Bachy Bachmayer promoted money for the table tubs for the Children's Hospital,
Jim Ackland brought Patsy Christianson & Mel Wilson up to the front to compliment them for attending the last inter-club and to let them remove that ugly red sticker off their badges, he also told of future inter-clubs in the planning stages,
Bob Holst make his last pitch for used eyeglasses and printer cartridges, the last because he is moving to the A.M. club (he said his wife made him do it!),
Lt. Gov. Joe Thompson told us of the upcoming District Governor's visit which will be a Sunday luncheon at the LC Country Club, on March 9th. Price will be $25 each and this will count as an interclub. Social hour 11:30, lunch at 12:30. Let's all join him!
Daryal Gant previewed future programs and asked all who planned to bring a guest to hear
Congressman Drier next week to sign up or call him in advance so we can have enough chairs and food.
BIRTHDAY, ANNIVERSARY'S, HAPPY, SAD ETC. BUCKS: The Pres picked on
Jeb Long for his Birthday and he said he's engaged to Marilyn Pieroni which didn't excuse him for being fined so he coughed up a "C' note for the Century Club,
Tom Gilfoy tried to duck but Pres Bob found him and quickly extracted another joiner of the
Centruy Club. Frosty Boyd gave a happy buck for the Marines and told a cow joke that was no bull,
Howard Backer announced that Harriett Hammons became a grandmother again,
Dave Spence gave some bucks and told all that Anthony Portantino
had to shower at the "Y" because his cup runeth over (actually it was his cesspool),
Bill Watts gave 10 happy bucks for the new mike as he now could hear what was going on. (Editor's note: I have previously stated that If you would do something so I could put your name in the paper, I would spell your name wrong but I didn't mean to screw up
Bill Scherkey's name so bad especially since he joined the century club. Sorry Bill).
SECRET GREETER (OR SHAKER?): It's still a secret
THE PROGRAM: An unusual program indeed as it was more of a "what's happening in our club day".
Pres Bob said we needed money to keep all our service projects running.
Joel Smith made a separate pitch for "dollars for the young adults of Kiev" where the
Brobergs are. He asked for donations that would go a very long way to aid these students in their quest for higher education. Make checks out to Kiwanis Foundation, a $100 donation is like $1000 there. Next on the program was
Eileen Ferber who explained the upcoming gourmet wine dinner to be held at the
Brookside Country Club on April 3rd at the low price of $75 ($25 deductible) for this outstanding event.
Mary Gant & Clyde Hemphill (Bonnie
Mary & Clyde) told us about the wine tasting and food tasting event to be held September 14th at the Memorial Park from 1 to 4 pm. $40 a head will get you in the gate.
And then Daryal Gant presented a bold and innovative plan for increasing club membership. This involves forming the club into "sports like" conference teams. Each team will vie to sponsor more members than the other team, starting now until September 30th (our Kiwanis year). There will be 24 teams of 6 members each and all members will be on
a team. There will be 3 league presidents and a conference chairman. The basic idea is to yield many, high-powered, new members and to have fun doing it.
Daryal Gant presenting his bold membership plan
Each club member will receive an info packet by mail in the next few days. The materials will specify the teams and give the rules of the game.
Daryal emphasized that the key to success will be individual enthusiasm, creativity and involvement, and don't forget the FUN part. Our slogan is "Shoot for the Stars" (or Mars?)
50/50 RAFFLE: Was won by Carl Christensen
CLOSING: "Come On Kiwanis" as produced and directed by
Ed Moulton
