OPENING: Music, Music, Music, by the talented fingers of Shirley DeGrey, filled the air as Kiwanian's gathered for their noon repast. Once again Ed Moulton led us in "God Bless America".

HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Our flag salute with patriotic dissertation was given by Patsy Christianson. The invocation was then presented by Don Davidson. Our program chairman Daryal Gant was next in line followed by an empty seat for our "mystery speaker" and Jeb Long occupied the last seat. We had an inter-club from the Hollywood-Wilshire Kiwanis Club, which included its president, and a past Lt. Gov. Other guests were Lt. Gov. Joe Thompson & our pianist Shirley DeGrey. Next "super" Ed Moulton took over and let us in not one but two songs with "consider yourself one of us" first and then "smile" which turned out to be appropriate for our "mystery speaker".

ANNOUNCEMENTS: The Pres again announced upcoming events:

January 20th - District Council meeting, Verdugo Hills Hospital Cafeteria, 7 pm

January 25th - Kiwanis Travelogue, Flintridge Prep "the Louis & Clark trail"

February 8th - Kiwanis Mid-winter Conference-Ontario (sign up sheet)

February 12th- Election Forum for City Council election
March 9th - Governor's visit to our club

March 29th - Total K day

Howard Backer reminded all to sign up for the Mid-winter convention, Matt Regan had a letter from Five Acres in thanks for toy donations, Patsy Christianson discussed the emergency sticker program for the back of children's car seats, Anthony Portantino touted the February 12th election forum which we are one of the sponsors, Jim Ackland announced the next inter-club with Montrose-La Crescenta on Tuesday January 21 at noon., Daryal Gant told us of upcoming programs, Bachy Bachmeyer plugged his favorite charity, the "Children's Hospital Miracle Network" and asked us to donate to the tubs on each table.

SECRET GREETER: Was Jim Reynolds and all who didn't "shake" him got fined as well as those without K pins.

HAPPY, SAD, GLAD OR OTHER BUCKS: With Karl Johnson as Sgt. Of Arms, Jack Dawson was first to pony up bucks for his wife's recent successful operation and glad that he's got her back to doing housework, Frosty Boyd told a shaggy horse story for a buck and once again Daryal Gant emulated Frosty with a joke. Patsy Christensen put in bucks for being away for 6 weeks although she thought would be only gone 4 weeks taking care of grandchildren& celebrating the birth of a new grandchild, even though she now is a Great-Grandma. (actually she was a great grandma for doing this).

50/50 DRAWING: And the winner was Rick Lazare

THE PROGRAM: We were kept in suspense awaiting the arrival of our "mystery speaker" and it was now 1 pm and he still hadn't showed up at the head table. After introducing our speaker anonymously, he finally announced that our "mystery speaker" was none other than our own Frost Boyd whose subject was "a laugh a day is a better way". He discussed how good laughter is for the human body. After laughter the body enters into a muscle relaxation stage, which helps to reduce pain. After an operation it is good to get the patient moving and laughing to reduce clots. Laughter increases immunity while crying or depression has the opposite affect. Laughing 100 times a day is as good as rowing for 10 minutes. Happy people live longer (whether they want to or not), and laughter loves company. It helps learning and increases morale. We all got a good laugh from the many jokes he told, his last words: "smile & you might get smiled at".
As were finished a little early joke telling became a contest as members told jokes and we "had a good laugh".
