The La Kawañian

DECEMBER 4, 2002
BILL WATTS, EDITOR

NOW HEAR THIS! NEXT WEEK'S MEETING WILL ALSO BE HELD AT THE La Cañada PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN BURCHAM HALL

OPENING: It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas as Shirley DeGrey plugged in a few Christmas songs in her piano pleasantries. Ed Moulton led us in "God Bless America".

HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Our Flag Salute was given from the floor by Anthony Portantino, Al Revisto appeared again this week at the head table, this time giving the invocation. Others at the head table were Daryal Gant, Karl Johnson, & our speaker Jeff Hoffman. Guest Key Club members Eve Komesar & Carly Naples were introduced by Ken Lowe. A visitor from the Glendale club was Terry Buchanan. Dick DeGrey introduced Shirley which was followed by "Hi Neighbor". A loud round of applause was given to the house committee for moving and setting up all our stuff and cooking up a real cooley lunch.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Donate bucks for a toy was called for by Matt Regan, Jim Ackerman thanked the club for their response to "Inter-clubs" and reminded us the next one is with the Flintridge Prep Key Club tomorrow (oh oh, did you miss it?) and a big one with the Pasadena Club on January 2nd where you can meet and greet our International President. You must reserve by December 27th and pay $25. Ed Moulton said to bring newspapers by his house or in the barrels in front of Descanso. Karl Anderson reminded all again to get a "sticker" from him to put on child car seats with emergency info. Bachy plugged bucks for the Children's Hospital, Bob Holst reminded all to bring in used eyeglasses, ink cartridges and tabs of aluminum cans, Daryal Gant plugged upcoming programs and asked for suggestions for new programs, Pat Anderson announced the Christmas Party again and the time is now 6 to 9 pm.

All Kinds of Bucks Dept: Jeff Hoffman celebrated his 39th Birthday with $39 and later (in his talk) changed that to the Century Club, Matt Regan coughed up $29 for his 29th, the Pres fined all for no pins (in plain sight) and also the "Secret Shaker" (a new phrase?) who was Howard Backer, parting with bucks to celebrate his 30th year as a Kiwanian was Al Revisto, Past President +1 Jim Edwards slowly started with "a few bucks" to celebrate USC's winning season and then rounded it off with his birthday and joined the Century Club. Clyde Hemphill put in a buck because Bill Watts didn't complain about the silverware, Frosty Boyd told a joke? Pres Bob put in a buck for the Kiwanians who showed up last weekend to help on the LCF Rose Parade Float. Glendale Kiwanian Terry Buchanan put in a buck "because the fines are cheaper here" and proceeded to tell a long story about golf that was worth more than a buck. Daryal Gant told a true story about Frosty's nurse?!

50/50 Drawing: Won by Frosty Boyd (giving him more funds to tell jokes with).

THE PROGRAM: Daryal Gant introduced fellow Kiwanian Jeff Hoffman who is a Vice President with Real Estate Mortgage Exchange in La Cañada. Jeff was formally head of corporate training for Anthony Robbins Company and served as a special assistant to past Governor Pete Wilson. He has a degree in English from Sacramento State and played pro football with the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. He started playing organized football at age 10 and went on to the NFL with what he called a short and unglamorous career. His stories were great and he kept us all intrigued.
