OPENING: Piano music Ala Carte was graciously conveyed through the piano artistry of Martha Crockett. Kiwanian extraordinaire Ed Moulton escorted us onward as we sang "This Is My Country".

HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Elevated to the head table and keeping Pres Bob company were Hal Thomas who helped us salute the flag "to the greatest county in the world", Don Davidson presented our invocation. Others at the head table were our own "craft talk" members Diane DellaValle, Bea Cirar, & Karl Johnson.
Martha Crockett & Shirley DeGrey where introduced by their spouses, Ken Lowe had us meet & greet Key Club members Roeanne Butts, Gal Bruck, Supottia Lerknant, Audrey Tjiptokesume & Rustin Zomorodi. Audrey & Supottia said that their Key Club won first place a recent regional conference. They performed over 1000 hours of service. "Hats off" to our Key Clubbers. After that Pres Bob reminded Ed Moulton (would you believe) to sing our welcome song.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Paul Westmoreland announced that the new inserts for the Kiwanis directory were here and that they will be here next week too for pick up, also he said the Soap Box Derby committee was forming and they hope to hold it on a day other than Memorial Day. PP Pat Anderson said to sign up for the Christmas Party on December 6th & passed around a sign up sheet for this "must attend" event. She also announced the next Chamber of Commerce mixer on November 21st at the Roger Barkley community center. Jim Ackland said our next inter-club would be on November 19th, at 6:15 p.m. with the Jewel City club, at Clancy's Restaurant in Glendale. He promised a free bag of oyster cookies to all who attend. He's also lining up lots of other inter-clubs (how about Las Vegas Jim?). Bachy pitched for bucks for the Children's Hospital, Daryl Gant told of all the future programs he has lined up.

HAPPY, SAD, GLAD, MAD OR WHATEVER BUCKS: Pres Bob "hit up" the Birthday Boys first (don't girls have birthdays?) with Mary Gant squealing that hubby Daryal's birthday was tomorrow and their 46th wedding anniversary was or is soon. For this good news she joined the "century club". Then Daryal got to pay again for his birthday. Pres Bob confessed that it was his birthday today. Ed Moulton said, "if they would kick in an extra five bucks he wouldn't sing happy birthday". They didn't so we did. I thought Elizabeth Calciano Georgeon was going to kick in a buck (the caterer must read our newsletter) for the " menu of what we're eating" that she requested last week. Frosty Boyd had a buck for the photo of Kiwanian Hal Thomas whose picture was in the News Press this week in his WWII captains uniform as he celebrated Veteran's Day (did you notice that Vet's Day this year fell on the original "Armistice Day" of 1918?) of course a joke was also forthcoming from Frosty's lips that induced a lot of sighs and laughs. Paul Westmoreland kicked in $5 for finally getting the job done with the new roster (we should be paying him instead).
Ed Moulton pledged $2 for whoever moves the trash barrels out to put the newspapers in. Collecting all these bucks was our almost newest member Karl Johnson who was today's Sgt of Arms. Anthony Portantino said that Hal Arman was in Verdugo Hills Hospital, reason unknown.

50/50 RAFFLE: Quickly won by Bill Wiederkehr.

THE PROGRAM: Members "Craft Talks" were the order of the day as membership chairman Paul Westmoreland introduced, first, Diane DellaValle proprietor of the Antique House in La Cañada. She was born in Glendale and grew up in what was "the country" of La Crescenta. She was a "Tom Boy" until the boys started shooting birds, which led her on the path to becoming a beautiful lady. She had several careers picked out as she grew up including commercial artist, and a news commentator. Instead she got married while in High School and had 2 children. She went back to school at Glendale College and then to Real Estate school and had her license at age 24. That wasn't her bag so she worked at Capital Records for a while as an Administrative Manager. She longed for the simple life and read a book that said she should be doing something she loves, so she is and has as the owner of the Antique house were all goods are on consignment and sold in 90 days.
Next was Bea Cirar who was born in Jerusalem to Christian parents. She has been in the U.S. for 54 years and reiterated, "this is the greatest country in the world". She is the mother of two sons and a grandmother to two boys. Her husband, who she traveled all over Europe with, has passed on. She is fluent in several languages and says the French are really nice people if you are nice to them. She is retired from the Insurance industry & lives next door to Pat Anderson.
Last, but not least, was Karl Johnson, who we have written up in previous newsletters. Karl has the distinction of having the first craft talk with a "show & tell" presentation. The articles presented included several articles from Guatemala & Columbia where he grew up before going to Arkansas for College. (Ask him about his "unique" method of preserving wood). His father was sent there by Dow Chemical and wound up selling more than his U.S. counter parts. One of his hobbies is "bonsai trees" (one of which he brought that is 40 years old). He has over 200 trees some as old as 750 years (this sounds like a full time job). He is a financial planner and he said the most important thing in life to him is his wife and one year old whom he dearly loves.

CLOSING: Ed Moulton & us, "Hailed Kiwanis".
