BILL WATTS, EDITOR
OPENING & HEAD TABLE: Martha Crockett simultaneously sampled the black & white keys as she ingratiated us with her rousing renditions at the piano including "bumble boogie".
Ed Moulton first ascertained that we were somewhere near being on key as he led us in "God Bless America".
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Glen Pettit directed us in the Flag Salute and

Larry Hall. La Cañada High Key Club members Jessica Hummel, Krissy Smith, Katie Barry &
Eon Lew were introduced by Ken Lowe. Dick DeGrey had us greet his wife of ?? how many years (the first thing to go)
Shirley, and Hal Crockett proudly presented his wife
Martha who was today's pianist. This was of course followed by "consider yourself one of us" directed by
Ed Moulton.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Doris Horwith reminded all committee chairs that their reports were due.
Barry Riedel reminded all that the next Kiwanis travelogue is on November 9th: "New Zealand", and it will be preceded by a group of choral singers.
Anthony Portantino announced the removal of the phone pole in the middle of Beulah; "The Mayor',
Dave Spence, just came back from a meeting with the kids at Palm Crest and was proud that they had all put their names and thumb print on a card that said they would not do drugs during their total school years. The kids said "thank you to all the old people".
Clyde Hemphill announced 3 new projects that we will be involved in together with other Kiwanis clubs; (1) save all your printer cartridges for re-cycling, (2) donate your used eyeglasses, (3) save all your aluminum can tabs. All of these things can be recycled for money for various Kiwanis good works. Bring them to the club each week.
Bachy Bachmayer asked for our continued support of the Children's Hospital by donating to the "pot" on each table.
Past Pres Pat Anderson made a special announcement to put on your calendar NOW: Our Annual Christmas Party will be at the
Toffel's on December 6th from 6 to 8 pm.
Patsy Christianson said she was the head of some committee that just slipped her mind (is it Community Service) and she needed help for an outstanding event that will deal with the Health of Children.
BIRTHDAY BOYS: Pres Bob extracted $100 big ones (a Century Clubber) from
Glenn Petit whose birthday was a week ago who said he doesn't acknowledge birthdays that end in a 5 or an 0.
Bachy Bachmeyer said he had reached his 86th. A rousing "Happy Birthday" was sung to both. (Don't these belong in Happy etc. bucks?)
HAPPY, SAD, GLAD, MAD/WHATEVER BUCKS: Ed Moulton proudly announced his sixty-second wedding anniversary. Isn't this a record?: 50 years in Kiwanis and married 62 years.
Melinda Thompson parted with bucks as she had missed the last two meetings and was glad to be back,
Past Pres Pat Anderson put in a happy buck that our City Manager
Jerry Fulwood had managed to manipulate his schedule to attend a meeting;
Frosty Boyd put in a buck as he is happy with all the good things young people are doing and of course he threw in a joke too;
Patsy Christianson had happy & glad bucks for her opportunity to have traveled to Mississippi to learn more about Habitat for Humanity and glad that she survived it; not to be outdone
Anthony Portantino said that as he is a director of "Habitat" he hoped it was a pleasant experience;
Bill Watts put in happy, sad & glad bucks, happy that the newsletter was being read, even the fine print that lists the officers etc., sad because he spelled
George Lutes name George Lucas in two places, and glad because we now have smaller rolls for lunch & not those "plate covering" ones.
Matt Regan put in some bucks as the stock market was UP in October.
Howard Backer kicked in another $5 in hopes it keeps up that way.
Hal Crockett kicked in bucks for something about airplanes and
Elizabeth Calcino Georgeon donated a buck for her grandson who said how beautiful Descanso Gardens is (?)
Allen Petit shared bucks for something about going to Florida (I can't get 'em all folks!).
THE PROGRAM: Jim Reynolds introduced Larry Hall the new C.E.O. and director of the
Y.M.C.A. Larry was born & bred in Gainesville, Ohio & holds a Masters degree from Ohio University. He has dedicated his entire career to the "Y" and has moved thru various executive positions and has spent from 1984 to the present in Seattle. When he gets accustomed to our area (when does it rain?) he will really get going. He's a baseball fan. He really likes the Angels because they play as a team and that's what it takes to make the "Y" work: "A Team Effort". The Crescenta-Canada YMCA Corp also includes the Verdugo YMCA in Tujunga. The CC YMCA has over 1800 members with 50% of them being under 17, and there are over 18,000 members overall in the "Y". He presented charts with lists of notable names that have participated in the YMCA in some fashion. The YMCA is the largest provider of childcare in the US with over 382 children registered locally. It is also the largest non-profit agency in the U.S. (perhaps the world) and was started in England in 1844.
50/50 RAFFLE: Won by Melinda Thompson who will get here early to sell tickets next week
CLOSING: Ed Moulton closed us up with "Hail Kiwanis
Having Fun Yet? If so, introduce Kiwanis to one of your friends or people you do business with. Bring in a new member and let him/her enjoy the benefits of helping others while having fun doing it.
Is It True? Department: No, the Century Club is not a 100-year-old baseball bat. What joining the "Century Club" means is that you are contributing $100 (maybe not all at once but in one year) to Kiwanis Foundation (tax deductible) to enable Kiwanis to carry out its many humanitarian works throughout the world. One of the latest being to bring relief to the victims of the recent floods in Europe.
"The European Relief Fund".
Is It True? Department (again): That a "Key" Club is a private nightclub that you need a "key" for admittance?
Question of the Week: What is Kota Kenabalu?
Answer to last week's Question of the Week: Our International President John "Ito"
Torres, M.D. has a great passion for flying kites.
