The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – January 26, 2000 Meghan Serwin, Editor We sounded unusually harmonious as Ed Moulton led us in "America the Beautiful" following Inez Pickering’s piano introduction. Jim Barrett led the Pledge of Allegiance and Pete Palermo provided the invocation. Members introducing guests included Mel Wilson, who brought Garth Dunn; Jeanne Broberg, who brought Floyd Walters, and Phil Hammons, with wife Harriet. We were all proud as can be of LCHS Key Club President David Zhao, who showed off the wonderful plaque and commendations his club received upon being named the Montrose/Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce’s Organization of the Year. Way to go, Key Clubbers! Happy Bucks came from birthday girl Patsy Christianson, who was glad to be vertical after bronchitis horizontalized her for awhile. Bill Wiederkehr donated $41 in honor of his wedding anniversary (at my table we were confused as to whether it was on the 31st or 41st of the month). Eileen Ferber gave ten Happy Bucks in honor of the Outlook’s Organization of the Year Award from the LCF Chamber of Commerce (yay!!), while Harold Arman, whose birthday is NOT in January, pledged to make a substantial contribution when he does turn a year older in July. Jim Reynolds advised one and all of our new joint project with the City to build the Jack Hastings Memorial Gazebo in Glenola Park, and warned that those whom Margaret Pankratz has not already conscripted to help will be drafted soon. Jim also asked for nominations for Lt. Governor; nominees must be prior presidents, and must be forwarded to Jim ASAP. Most excitingly, Jim told of a new system for our weekly raffle: starting next week, the winner will get 50% of that week’s ticket sales, which should increase participation and also increase the club’s income. This week’s pot tragically did not go to David Zhao, so it will carry over to next week. The Ground Hog Day pot will include $44.50 from this week plus half of next week’s ticket sales, so buy liberally! (Ken Lowe, you’re in charge of sales next week, since young David needs to be back at school.) Jim also reviewed the following upcoming dates: Kiwanis Cruise on March 10 (call Jim ASAP to sign up); International Conference in Miami June 22-28 (contact Jim Reynolds or Jim Edwards, though apparently only Mr. Reynolds knows how to lead us astray in southern Florida). Other announcers were Pete Palermo, who needs us all to let him know if we’re bringing guests to or, conversely, not attending the Feb. 9 lunch with the Rose Court.; Sharin Orr, who needs committee reports by this weekend; and Tom Slaughter, who’s got our website up and running (hooray!!!), and needs everybody’s e-mail address, photo, personal info corrections, and help with creating content. The website is at www.lacanadakiwanis.org; Tom’s email is webteam@lacanadakiwanis.org. The very exciting program was presented by Ed Moulton and his guest, Bruce Finwall, a life-long Soap Box Derby enthusiast. As has been announced previously, we will be hosting the First Annual (well, First Ever, anyway) Kiwanis Soap Box Derby on May 27-28. The Derby is open to kids 9 through 16, who will have the opportunity to order, assemble, and race kit-type cars in three divisions. (Tom Slaughter and I wondered if we were the only ones in the room with multiple kids in that age bracket, each of whom will demand his own $400 car.) The proposed race course is Cornishon Avenue; Ed looked like a 9-through-16 year old himself in announcing that the Derby cars may hit speeds of 30 mph down that hill, which has a posted speed limit for real cars of 25. (Can we all pitch in and buy Ed his own car kit?) Here’s the most important part: each of us must fill out and return to Ed the attached questionnaire regarding the means through which we’d like to help out with this wonderful activity. Fill it out even if you can’t help out, so Ed knows not to try to track you down. On deck for next week: Flag salute, Hal Thomas; Invocation, Phil Anderson.
