The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – November 28, 2001 Deborah Orlik, Editor Two rhinoceros adorned the head table today as we lunched at the Lutheran Church in the Foothills. Martha Crockett at the piano. Thanks so much, Martha! At the head table were Jay Rabadi (what do we have to do to see you more often, Jay?) who led us in the pledge of allegiance. Glen Petit gave the invocation. Jim Ackland was there, too. Dr. Frosty Boyd led us in the 1st and last verses of "America" and the truth is, Frosty, none of us knows the words to the last verse. GUESTS: Boy Scout Clifton Smith came to tell us about his Eagle project. He brought his mom, Candace, along, too. Bill Watts was introduced as a guest, but he's really one of us now...or will be shortly. Yours truly was also introduced as a guest but, really, you've seen me more often than you've seen Bill. We took a vote on whether to "go dark" for the January 2, 2002 meeting because it is the same day as the giant international meeting and interclub in Pasadena. The vote was unanimous to not have our meeting January 2nd and we hope to see all of you in Pasadena. (Actually, Harold Arman voted against, but he just did it because...well,...because he's Harold.) REMEMBER: We're dark Wednesday, December 26th, too. REMEMBER #2: We meet at the Lutheran Church again on Wednesday, December 5th. HAPPY/SAD BUCKS and FINES: Hal Crockett had 5 happy bucks for Martha's birthday. Tom Slaughter had a virus buck along with a warning about new viruses going around the Internet. If you get one of these viruses, you won't need a doctor. You'll need Tom. Harold Arman had at least 2 happy bucks because he didn't have to pay a fine for having his picture in the paper (he was wearing his Kiwanis pin) and also because his doctor has cleared him to drive again. Dr. Boyd had a sad buck for Harold because he couldn't afford full length pants. He also had a "Frosty buck" about the five stages in life. If you want to know what they are, give him a shout. In absentia, Hal Thomas was fined $5 for not having his Kiwanis pin on while he was having his picture taken with Harold for the newspaper. Pat Flynn, shaking in his shoes, was also not fined for having that great pix and article about the Terrific Kids in the paper. Bob Wallace was not wearing his pin at the Tournament of Roses mixer and was silly enough to let his picture get published in the paper. $5 fine. Ed Moulton and Dave Spence are celebrating marital bliss anniversaries (they're not married to each other) and got away cheap at $10 a piece. Prez Pat made a special announcement for Lou Roberts. We're so glad to see you back with us! ANNOUCEMENTS: Howard Backer reminds us that Saturday, December 8th is the Holiday party. Before you go there, stop at City Hall where we will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary from 5-7 pm. Committee Chairs, ppllleeeaaassse get your reports in. Ed Moulton noted that most endowment funds are named after someone who's dead...and he isn't... so he wants to change the name of our new endowment fund to "Ol' What's His Name Endowment Fund." Regardless, he put 1,000 of his own bucks into the fund. Clifton Smith, from a boy scout troop in Pasadena, told us about his Eagle Project: a clothing drive, to be held at the San Marino Tribune Building, 2260 Huntington Drive, San Marino on December 15th, from 8 am to 4 pm. The recipient group, the Los Angeles Men's Project, helps over 4,200 homeless men and women with meals, information, job referrals, employment, housing and counseling. To get jobs, they need appropriate clothing, so please donate your used clothing for men, women, and even children. Used ties are welcome! (Really!) Thanks, Clifton for a job well done. PROGRAM: Jim Ackland introduced our speaker, Don Simcovich, from Child Share, an organization which helps family-less children get out of institutional-care into homes with families. His mission is finding families to commit to these kids and providing a network of support for the kids and their foster or adoptive families. Don shared with us some stories of his adopted kids along with information about his organization. We all know this, right? Children need families. Let's do what we can to help them get into loving homes. NEXT WEEK: PROGRAM - San Marino High School Choir--M. Marsteller, directing. FLAG SALUTE - Pat Anderson, INVOCATION - Dick DeGrey. Remember that Dec. 5, we meet once again at Lutheran Church In The Foothills.
