The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – November 21, 2001

Tom Slaughter, Editor

THE GATHERING: On this Pre-Thanksgiving day, Martha Crocket was at the piano as everyone dined on Thanksgiving fare and an uncommon dessert (pumpkin pie, of course). At the head table were Bill Scherkey, Melinda Thompson, Karen Drew of the Pasadena Club, Jack and Barbara Dawson, Harold Arman, and Barry Riedel.

With Ed at the baton, we sang "America the Beautiful". Bill Scherkey led the pledge, and Melinda gave the invocation. Today's Sgt was Bob Holts and the secret greeters were Joel Smith and Hal Crocket. After our traditional opening, we then sang "We Gather Together" in celebration of the next days gatherings.

GUESTS: Many from the Pasadena Club inter-clubbed with us including Pres Karen Drew, Lt Gov Mel Smith and Members Craig Wallace, Joe Moore, Peggy Reger, Harry Crusberg, Dave Cashion, Ed Pittroff, John Marshall, and Dick Thomas.

Other guests were prospective members Joe Block and Bill Watts. Also joining us were Don Mazen; Bill Guest; wife of Bob, Wealthy Slattery; and wife of Phil, Harriet Hammons. Mayor Anthony brought his progeny Sofia and little Isabella Rose (who was very quiet throughout the entire meeting).

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND FINES: Pres Pat announced that Dana Fulwood, wife of Jerry, is in the hospital withsome severe injuries after her horse fell on her.

Bill Scherkey gave us the details on our upcoming Christmas party, which will be at the Toffel's on Dec 8th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (or thereabouts). The signup sheet went around asking everyone to bring a Main Course, Salad, or Dessert (please signup if you plan on attending).

Vice-Pres Bob Wallace announced we will be having an interclub next Tuesday at noon. Give him a call for details. Craig Wallace of the Pasadena club asked for support for this year's Kiwanis International Rose float.

Pres Pat "suggested" that Bob Martin ought to pay for his recent trip to Okinawa Japan. Of course, those who know Bob were not surprised when this was all the encouragement he needed to launch into a mini travelogue of his adventures including the changes since his being there after WWII.

Next week, don't show up at Descanso, because we will be meeting at the Lutheran Church in the Foothills for the next two weeks.

HAPPY, SAD, BUSINESS BUCKS: Frosty took the floor first with a very forgettable (but clean) joke. Ed Moulton was sad due to the bursting of his water heater which flooded 2/3 of the house. Jim Edwards was very happy due to the USC victory over their cross-town rivals.

Don Mazen had two happy bucks – for son number one's successful gallbladder surgery and son number two's business transfer.

Bob Wallace was a century clubs worth of happy for his week in N.Y. and his recent anniversary. Al Perry Sr. was happy to tell a joke about the pledge, and Melinda Thompson was elated because Anthony asked her to hold (cradle she did) Isabella Rose whilst he was busy.

PROGRAM: Jack Dawson was introduced by Harold Arman, which led many to wonder if the intro was the program. Finally however, Harold stepped aside (we love you Harold) and Jack took us all on a seventeen hundred mile (or so) tour of Europe in a Model "A". About fifty vehicles (all shipped from the US) were involved in what Jack described as "Senior Citizens driving Senior Cars, touring Europe". They were divided up into groups of eight to ten cars and very surprisingly suffered only one major mechanical failure (of a car that is). He remarked on how clean everything was and told of good times and good food while he treated us to a nice slide show. In a word, he said they were "spoiled rotten" by all the locals.

NEXT WEEK: The head table for next week is a bit different because we will be off-site at the Lutheran Church in the Foothills.

Program: Don Simkovich talking about "Child Share" (yes, share not care). Introducing him will be our Program Chairman, Jim Ackland.

Flag Salute, Jay Rabadi ; Invocation, Glen Pettit.
