The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – November 14, 2001

Daryal Gant, Guest Editor

Head Table: Along with Prez Pat Anderson were: Sheila Cook, Bill Wiederkehr, Phil Anderson, Chuck Gulick, Rachael Worby, and Tom Leddy.

Opening: Ed M. led us in rousing versions of the signature songs of all four armed services, in honor of Veteran's Day. All noted that Hal Thomas was in his great-looking Army Air Corps uniform! The flag salute was led by Phil Anderson; the invocation was given by Chuck Gulick. All this after Martha Crockett was vigorously thanked for her spirited piano music.

Guests: Many guests were introduced, including: Katherine Markgraf, Joe Block, Bill Watts, Bob Holtz, Sheila Bodell, Deborah Orlik, and Ann Hazen. ( Joe and Bill are prospective new members.) Lt Gov Pat Lidell was also guesting today.

Introduction and Mental Preparation of the Crowd: Pat A. cast pearls to the swine by giving a tutorial on what famous people were born, and what important things happened on Nov 14, throughout history. Had her research been more thorough, she would have discovered that a certain club member was also born on this date. This was not mentioned.

New Member Initiation: Bob Holtz was greeted and duly sworn-in by Bill Scherkey and Pat Lidell, then wildly cheered by the masses. Welcome Bob! Your work assignment will be along shortly. Bob was also welcomed by Howard Backer with great enthusiasm as he presented Bob with his first monthly billing. All agreed that it was a very sensitive touch.

Happy/Sad/Business bucks: Tom Slaughter for the pigeon-of-the week, Daryal Gant, who will do the minutes. He also advertised his computer tune-up special. Elizabeth Georgeon for happiness with grandchildren. Jack Dawson whose Model A made it back from Europe OK. Joan Peters for successful Flintridge Prep football. Pat Lidell in glee over our new member. Jim Reynolds in recognition that Bob H. "accidentally" left his wallet at home. Hal Thomas for his happy and patriotic experience with the Renaissance Academy.

Announcements:

Bill Scherkey reminded us of the Christmas social 0n Dec 8 at the Toffel's.

Phil Anderson announced the creation of a foundation endowment fund known as the "Ed Moulton League". Contributions of $1,000 or more earns the donor the title of "Moulton Colleague" (Phil is setting a good example by donating right away in order that Pat could be the first Colleague.) It should be noted that you may donate the $1,000 all at once or over a five year period to qualify as a "Moulton Colleague."

Pat Flynn stated that he needs a volunteer on Nov 30 to help with the Terrific Kids functions.

Bachy reminded us to put something in the pots for Children's Hospital.

The Program: Sheila Cook introduced Rachael Worby, Music Director of the Pasadena Pops Orchestra. Sheila also acknowledged the presence of Pat Leddy, President of the Pops. Rachael, who has spoken to us before, reminded us of the Pops programs and the sundry benefits to the communities of L. A. County. She especially shared the Pops activities in support of disadvantaged children. The objective is to enrich their lives and to help the children to realize that they, too, are "somebody." She described these activities as being like those of Kiwanis--both organizations are involved in "building" with particular emphasis on kids. She asked for our support in any way that we can provide it.

Adjournment: The meeting ended with a well coordinated and semi-professional -like group rendition of Hail Kiwanis.

NEXT WEEK: PROGRAM - Jack Dawson: "Touring Europe in a Model A." INTRO BY Paul Bobzin

HEAD TABLE: FLAG SALUTE - Bill Scherkey, INVOCATION - Melinda Thompson. Distinguished members: Barry Riedel and Harold Arman.
