The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – November 7, 2001

Deborah Orlik, Guest Editor

OPENING: Thanks to Martha Crocket for her wonderful pianissimo. Please be careful, Martha. Two other ladies who have played piano for us are currently recovering from broken bones. Shirley DeGrey and Inez Pickering, we were told, are both on the mend. Ken Lowe led us in the pledge; Don Davidson gave the invocation.

HEAD TABLE AND GUESTS: Also at the head table were Pat Flynn, Chairman of Terrific Kids, and Lt. Gov. Pat Liddell. (With Pres Pat, that's three Pat's in a row!) Visitors today were Prospective Member Bill Watts, Geoffrey Baum, just elected, Walt Winner and yours truly. Next week, we're told, two new members will be inducted (if Frosty were in charge, they would no doubt be "induced".) Ken Lowe had two Key Clubbers with him: Brynn Gute and Jessica Hummel.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Barry Riedel reminding us to attend the Travel Adventure trip to Switzerland this Saturday evening. 7:30 pm at Flintridge Prep. Please park in the St. Bede's lot. Ed Moulton says there's a Pre-Travel Adventure dinner at Conrads at 5:15. Doris Horwith, new Secretary of the Club, needs all Committee reports ASAP. Jack Dawson is in charge of the tree lighting in Glenola Park this year and rounded up two volunteers to help put the lights up. Jerry Fulwood's wife, Dana, is in the hospital. We all wish her "Get Well Soon!".

HAPPY, SAD AND BUSINESS BUCKS: If you didn't have your voting stub and Kiwanis pin, it was worth a buck each. Barry Riedel had a sad buck and a happy buck: He lost the school board election but has more time to spend with his son. Tom Slaughter had a happy buck cuz I agreed to do the newsletter again. Geoff Baum had $50…and that's VERY happy…for his election to the Pasadena Community College Board. Daryal Gant and wife Mary heeded the call to go to NYC and spend money. Poor Daryal. Jim Reynolds had 36 happy bucks because it's the 36th time he's turning 39 years old. Frosty Boyd had a cell phone joke and that started a flood of jokes from Ed Moulton et al.

50/50 to Daryal Gant who really needs that money after his trip to NYC.

PROGRAM: Jeb Long gave his craft talk. He's been a Computer Software Specialist for 40 years. That means, in his words, he knows more and more about less and less. He's been at it for so long, he knows a whole bunch about nothin'! He graduated with a degree in physics from U. Texas and then he talked about all of the technical stuff he knows and the books he's written. It was a great job, Jeb!

It was Terrific Kid Day (they sat in chairs that had balloons tied to them which, after last week's debacle, could have been a mistake but wasn't). Eric Johnson, Nick Loui, Meghan Miller, and Brittany Kang … and parents … joined us to honor these terrific kids! Resident photographer Philip Anderson took the pix. We're told he's a graduate of the Dick DeGrey School of Photography. Oh joy.

Lt. Gov. Pat Liddell donned his Rhino shirt because it's the Year of the Rhinoceros for the Noon Club. He announced that this year the District is engaging in an "Adopt a Park" program. March 16, 2002 is Total K Day. The Division 3 Governor's Dinner will be at the La Cañada Country Club on May 7th, 2002. A $1000 donation to the District Foundation will get you a Dunlap Award. A $1000 donation to Kiwanis International Foundation will get you a Hickson Award. $1500 will get you both! The AIMS Award will be given to anyone with 3 months perfect attendance, 5 interclubs, sponsor a new member, and one service project. (AIMS stands for attendance, interclub, membership, service). The Distinguished Kiwanian Award requires a bit more. The First Lady's project this year is Pediatric Trauma Prevention including educational programs for kids and First Responders training. Jim Reynolds really likes this year's Aloha shirts. You'll need one for the International Convention. Pres Pat will have order forms next week.

NEXT WEEK: PROGRAM - Rachel Worby, Conductor of the Pasadena "Pops". INTRO BY Sheila Cook.

HEAD TABLE: FLAG SALUTE - Philip Longfellow Anderson, INVOCATION - Chuck Gulick. Distinguished members: Barry Riedel and Bill Wiederkehr.
