The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – October 31, 2001

Deborah Orlik, Special Ghost Editor

OPENING: While we were goblin' our lunch, Martha Crocket played the piano for us, (forgive me if my favorite selection was "Love is a Many Splendored Thing"). The Great Pumpkin, Pat Anderson, was in the holiday spirit (get it? spirit?) in her black suit and bright orange blouse. The ghost of Brian Hull led us in the pledge; Bill Scherkey gave the invocation.

HEAD TABLE AND GUESTS: Also at the headless table were Tom Stafford and Glen Pettit. Pres Pat offered that Brian should have been in costume…like Santa Claus, he appears once a year. Visitors today were Ralph Vargas and yours truly (guests of Tom Slaughter). Bill Watts was Jim Edwards' guest. Jim claims that Bill has been a La Cañada resident for over 120 years. That's a story for Halloween, huh? Bill is reportedly looking to join the club. I hope there's no age limit.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Pres Pat announced that you need to turn in the yellow form and the purple form, the latter of which was due by September 19 Two Thousand And One, plu-ease. Howard Backer announced that the Nancy Palermo Memorial Fund at the YMCA is switching from a liquidating to a permanent fund. Bill Scherkey had great news that the Toffels are opening their home once again for the Annual Holiday Party. Mark your calendars for December 8th. Ed Moulton needs volunteers to help with the parking at the Travel Adventure series. The next one will be on November 10th. According to Barry Riedel, we're going to "balmy Switzerland". Uh huh. The Travel Adventure date didn't make it on to the November calendar of events, so Ed tried to fine Pat $25. Pat, having not had a successful (mind reading) séance recently, rejected the fine.

HAPPY, SAD AND BUSINESS BUCKS: Brian & Carol Hull celebrating their anniversary 31 years. Brian joined the Century Club. Not to be outdone, Ed Moulton announced he and his will be celebrating their 61st anniversary so he joined the Century Club. Tom Slaughter had a business buck to announce that with the hiring of Ralph, he'd like to change his reputation from consulting home computers only to businesses' computers, as well. Ralph has a whole alphabet of certifications from A+ to MSCE…or something like that. Elizabeth Calciano-Georgeon had a buck for UFO sightings in Descanso (they are apparently attracted to the Edison lines.) In response, Richard Schulhof had 20 happy bucks that the UFO people have disappeared. Aliens can enter the Gardens for free. Richard also announced that there is a new stage at Descanso made possible by a grant from the Ahmanson Foundation. There is a Japanese Festival there this coming weekend. Howard Backer had a buck for Bill Watts visiting due to his Presbyterian status and for the great turn out at Saturday nights Travel Adventure. Thanks go to Barry Riedel and the T.A. group. Frosty had a joke about doctors that should have cost him more than a buck. Jim Edwards was happy to see Brian Hull. Bob Wallace had an ad-buck for Sunday's Wine & Roses event at the La Cañada Country Club. There are still seats available if you want to join us there.

PAT'S Pastime: Pres Pat asked Kiwanis quiz-questions of those folks silly enough to sit at a chair with a balloon tied to it. We all looked pretty ghoulish not knowing the answers. The primary lesson we all learned today was to NOT sit in the chairs with balloons. Jack Dawson won the 50/50 and groused that he never gets the money. You can take that to the bank, Jack.

PROGRAM: Jim Ackland introduced our guest sneakers today, Susie Decker and Jessica Ramirez from WOW, Wildlife on Wheels. Jessica explained that giving children an opportunity to get "nose-to-nose" with some of these wild animals teaches respect for themselves and for animals. If we can teach them compassion for animals, perhaps they'll have more compassion for each other. Amen to that. The Giant African Millipedes were, indeed, giant, and exactly what you don't want to run into on Halloween. "Charlotte" the Mexican Red Legged Tarantula was creepy-crawly-fuzzy-and really kinda nice…for a spider. When Jessica brought out her 5 foot Bull snake, Dave Spence made a fast b-line for the door. Frosty, our resident retired OB/GYN wanted to know if it was a girl snake or a boy snake. Typical. Scooter, the striped skunk, we heard is a movie star in Dr. Doolittle 2. And the Red Tail hawk, "Scarlet" was also a hit. We held our applause until Scarlet was safely back in the cage.

NEXT WEEK:

PROGRAM - Lt. Gov. Pat Liddell (this is his official visit). INTRO BY BOB WALLACE

HEAD TABLE: FLAG SALUTE - Ken Lowe, INVOCATION - Don Davidson. HONORED MEMBERS AT HEAD TABLE - Bob Frank and Jerry Fulwood.
