The La Kawañian

OCTOBER 23, 2002
BILL WATTS, EDITOR

OPENING: The melodic music of Shirley DeGrey magically mesmerized Kiwanians awaiting their noon repast. Mr. "K" Ed Moulton vigorously conducted us through a rousing rendition of America.

HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Joan Peters led us in the Flag Salute and George Lutes presented a wonderful invocation. Also gracing the head table was our speaker Nancy Santullo and Betty Ho (Deputy Mayor of Pasadena). Paul Westmoreland overwhelmed us with his guests: Harry & Pat Detweiler, Ron Ploszan, soon to be inducted Karl Johnson & his wife Yvonne & daughter Nicole. Dick DeGrey introduced our piano player Shirley DeGrey. Pat Flynn introduced "Terrific Kids" from La Cañada Elementary, Garret Grey and Kate Beck and their parents, Stephen and Claire Beck and Paul and Mary Grey.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Paul Westmoreland announced that the new directory for our club will be available to be picked up at the November 15th meeting. Jim Ackland (Mr. Inter-Club) announced an easy way to get rid of the red sticker on your badge: attend an Inter-Club with the Key Club at La Cañada High School on October 31st, (no costumes needed and this is a treat, not a trick). The time is from 12:15 to 12:45 on the East Balcony. Park across the street in the park. Also announced was that there will be an "open house" at the information resource center at the High School on November 9th.

(The Club Treasury took a hit as there was no "secret greeter", no fines and no happy, sad etc. bucks as more time was needed for the soapbox derby discussion.

NEW MEMBER INDUCTED: Paul Westmorland inducted Karl Johnson as our newest member and loaded him up with all the new member memorabilia. (see more about Karl on the back page).

SOAP BOX DERBY DISCUSSION: Joel Smith presented a well-researched discussion as to why our club should continue to have the Soap Box Derby as one of our major projects. Tom Gilfoy presented the "other side" of the story and why our board of directors voted against continuing it although he had to admit he was all for continuing the project and somebody else should have been speaking against it. Anyhow, a "secret ballot" was held and it was later announced that it had passed and we will continue to have a Soap Box Derby. (Don't forget that when you're asked to help!)

PROGRAM: Bob Martin introduced our speaker Nancy Santullo, founder and Executive Director of "House of Children" (HOTC). HOTC is a nonprofit organization founded on the belief that one person can make a difference in the lives of poor children in Peru. It is dedicated to supporting indigenous children in the Manu Rain Forest of Peru, offering inspiration & opportunity within the context of the native environment. These children & their families lack the economic resources and education to satisfy basic human needs. Native peoples have a great deal to teach us not only on the spiritual level, but also about practical issues about the environment in which they live. They have great knowledge about medicines, wild and domesticated food plants, dyes, insect repellents, perfumes and other practical uses of plants. This is an outstanding program that is monetarily supported by our club. For more info check out the website at  www.houseofthechildren.org.  Send e-mail to rainforestkids@houseofthechildren.org.

50/50 RAFFLE: Won by Ken Lowe who will be selling tickets next week.

CLOSING: "Ever ready Ed" Moulton led us in "Hail Kiwanis".

COMING ATTRACTIONS

Next Week: (October 30th) "Future of The Crescenta- Canada YMCA". The "new" director of the "Y" Larry Hall will tell of plans and changes at the "Y".

INTER-CLUB AT LCHS: October 31st, 12:15 to 12:45

November 6th: The Oregon & Santa Fe Trails (get along little doggie) with our own JACK DAWSON who will take us on a bumpy motorcycle tour of these historic sites. (No helmets required).

November 6th: Craft talks by our new members. Help Cheer on the neophytes.

November 20th: "Identity Theft" presented by Suzanne Reed, Chief of Staff for Assemblywoman Carol Liu. This is a serious and growing problem, learn how to prevent it from happening to you.

It May Be True: That a "Round Robin" is a pregnant bird but it also is the name of one of the specific goals of our club this year: "To have ALL members participate in an INTER-CLUB MEETING", and thus; "A Round Robin" is born. Through the fellowship gained by inter-club activities, members learn how other clubs function, get to know their neighboring Kiwanians, develop new ideas and a broader interest in how Kiwanis operates, find new ideas for use in their own clubs, and become better Kiwanians. If everyone would attend just one inter-club we could qualify for a Super Round Robin award. Sign up now for the next Inter-Club meeting on October 31st at LCHS with the Key Club.

Question of the Week: What is one of the great passions of our Kiwanis International President John "Ito" Torres, M.D.?

Answer to Last Week's Question of the Week: There are over 51,000 women members of Kiwanis and 1 in 7 is a club president.

Is it True? Department: That the "Century Club", that we hear so much about, is a 100 year old baseball bat?

Roster Changes: The roster will only be printed on the back of the newsletter on the first meeting of each month. If you have any changes you would like made please send them to Jeb Long at jeblong@earthink.net or call Jeb at 249-0208.
