The
La Kawañian
La
Cañada, CA – October 16, 2002
Bill Watts, Editor
OPENING: Martha Crockett (rumor has it she's related to Davy) blazed a trail of melodic music to delight Kiwanians.
Ed Moulton bounced out a lively rendition of
"God Bless America".
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Pat Flynn led us in the Flag Salute followed by
Chuck Gulick with an invocation. Our new District Governor (and speaker)
Joe Thompson filled out the head table roster. Hal Crockett introduced his wife (and our pianist) Martha.
Dick DeGrey introduced wifey Shirley; Diane Della
Valle presented her guest Helen Elliott. Ken Lowe happily introduced Key Club members
Audrey Tiptokesuma (sp?) & Sang Cho who told us of their recent 1st place award. Led by "Mr. Ed", we welcomed our guests with "consider yourself one of us" which Ed says we should all have memorized.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Pres. Bob said to remember that we will have a secret ballot vote next week on the Soap Box Derby. (Which reminds me, we didn't have a "secret greeter" this week, or It's still a secret.) He also applauded
Ed Moulton for putting together a group of volunteers to help out the LC library.
Sheila Cook passed around a sign up sheet for (I don't know what).
Ed Moulton (you remember him) said he needs volunteers to help move the paper collection barrels.
Bachy Bachmayer reminded all to double our contribution to the Children's Hospital this week as he didn't get a chance to remind us last week.
HAPPY/SAD, GLAD, MAD OR WHATEVER BUCKS: Jim Ackland was the Sgt. At Arms collecting bucks from
Sheila Cook who had a happy and sad buck. Sad that someone put a bullet hole in Citizen's Bank window but happy that it didn't hit anyone;
Howard Backer who said he tripped at the P.O. (didn't pass out) but got lots of attention including a cat scan of his brain and they didn't find anything (not even sawdust?);
Dick DeGrey for the excellent piano music they will hear tonight on the "guess who donated it" piano at LCHS.
Bill Watts gave two sad bucks for stating in the newsletter that someone other than
Harold Arman donated happy bucks last week to try to influence the removal of the bowling ball size rolls (couldn't we at least have baseball size rolls for the World Series?)
Doris Horwith parted with bucks for her two grandchildren who both just turned 16 (different fathers) and got a new car? Both of them?
Tom Gilfoy was coerced into revealing his 40th wedding anniversary and joined the Century Club (if he wasn't already a member);
Daryl Gant forked up bucks for he and Mary's upcoming 3-week vacation to Panama, Peru, the rain forest etc.;
Jim Edwards put in bucks to help SC recover? Diana's guest
Helen Elliott parted with a couple because she was just happy to be here. Past Pres.
Pat Anderson donated dollars to support her son-in-law who's going for a job interview in hopes he will prevail.
Pres Bob put in "Ad bucks" for the upcoming T of R "wine & roses" event at the LC Country Club where you can greet & meet the new Rose Queen and Princess's;
Daryl Gant came back again (is it a memory thing?) and donated a buck for
Jeb Long who was the guest speaker at a recent Microsoft Convention of computer nerds.
50/50 RAFFLE: Won by (whom else but "Mr. Lucky") Daryl Gant (it's a good thing he'll be gone for 3 weeks to give some other lucky person a change to win.) He will find somebody else to sell tickets next week.
PROGRAM: Pres Bob introduced our new District Governor
Joe Thompson , who has lived in LC for 27 years, has been married for only 41 years, has 3 kids and 9 grandchildren (and he's so young looking, it must be tennis). Joe thanked us for showing up 25 strong at his installation dinner and proceeded to tell us of his goals and ambitions for our District during his reign. The Cal-Neva District has 20,000 members but we've lost 25 last year and he wants 30 new members this year to replace them plus the start up of new clubs. One of the most interesting portions of his talk was the showing of a video about the KIWANIS FAMILY HOUSE at the University of Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. It was started by Kiwanians in 1984 and is similar to the Ronald McDonald house. It is staffed and funded by Kiwanians and does a fantastic job in supporting children by keeping their familiestogether during hospitalization. It has helped over 20,000 families since it began. He reminded us that the goal of Kiwanis is "Serving the Children of the World".
LUCKY US: The Pres forgot to fine us for not wearing our pins this week. Beware of this next week as well as the "secret greeter".
NEXT WEEK: "The House of Children in Peru," Nancy Santullo
October 30th - Future of the Crescenta-Canada YMCA. The "new" Y director Larry Hall will tell of plans and changes of the Y.
November 6th - The Oregon and Santa Fe Trails. Our own Jack Dawson
will take us on a bumpy motorcycle tour of these historic sites.
Plan Ahead: Planning your 2003 vacation??? Why not visit Indianapolis and the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a National Historic Landmark since 1987. Oh Yes, while your there attend the 88th Annual Kiwanis International Convention, June 20-24, 2003 and visit the International Headquarters of Kiwanis.
Did You Know??: There are more than 8,200 Kiwanis clubs with nearly 300,000 members in 80 nations and geographic areas.
Question of the Week: How many women are there in Kiwanis?? (Answer next
week)
Is It True ? Department: That a "Round Robin" is a pregnant
bird? (Hear more next week)
