The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – October 03, 2001 After delightful piano entertainment by Martha Crockett, the first meeting of the new year started with the traditional walk-out, which didn't phase Prez Pat one bit! We tried to atone by singing "Let me call you sweetheart" and then followed with "America the Beautiful" led by Ed. Sheila Cook led the Pledge and Phil A. gave the invocation. Then came the introduction of the Head Table consisting of the "afour"mentioned. The head table is a return to tradition, and future occupants will be notified in advance and fined if absent. Guests included Ellen Portantino and daughter-to-be Isabel Rose; Jeb Long, a prospective member; Key-clubbers Jen Clary and Jessica Hummel (daughter of AM Kiwanian Brian) Bob Holst, friend of Mel Wilson; and Don Mazen of The Outlook. We welcomed them with "Hi, Neighbor" and followed with our old favorite "Smile and the World smiles with you!:" Announcements: Jim R. is doing the year-end report and needs help in dressing up the committee reports; Howard B. is closing out the year and needs any remaining bills to be paid. Phil A. as Chair of Spiritual Aims will welcome volunteers for invocations. Anthony reminded us of the need to hit the buckets for the Children's Hospital. Sad Bucks: Sheila Cook for three news articles NOT mentioning Kiwanis!, (but exempt, dated last year). Anniversaries: Don D., Daryl G., Tom G. Birthdays for Bachy Bachmayer; Jack D. for a tour of Europe in his Model A; Bill Bodell for opening escrow on a new house; Carl Christensen for an Australian trip and the honor and sympathy expressed by the Aussies; Bill S. for his recuperating grandson; Hal C. for a performance this Friday evening of a composition by his son Don. The drawing was won by Anthony whose ticket was picked by his wife! The program was taken over by Prez Pat who emphasized the need to work together as a team, each doing his/her part in committee work. She announced that board meetings will be Thursdays, 6:30 PM at the Lutheran Church, and that Doris Horwith will be club secretary, Sandy having resigned for health reasons. (Ed.
note: With Prez Pat I predict a banner year ahead for our club!) At the head table: Linda Bilheimer (Flag Salute), Phil Hammons (Invocation), Jim Ackland, Pat Flynn, Tom Slaughter Oct.
