Tom Burrows and Carl Christensen lead us in ‘America the Beautiful”

LEADING US TODAY

In the absence of our own Prez, who apparently prefers rafting to Kiwanis meetings, Prez Elect Bill Watts took over.

GUESTS:

Tony Myuett was the guest of Tom Passanisi who revealed that       their Friendship was from the days when they both worked at AIJ.

Carl Kozlawski was once again the guest of Brian Fuller; Carl is with  the “Pasadena Weekly” and will be interviewing folks in organizations such as our club to do articles.  Cory Stevens didn’t miss a beat when she requested that he give our upcoming Wine & Gourmet Food Tasting a review.

Tom and Carl lead us is a lively rendition of ‘Hi Neighbor.’

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS:

Skip Boyd gave a Sad buck because he had seen Tom Slaughter who  lamented that he could not attend today’s meeting.

Pat Anderson gave a very Happy buck because her contractor informed her that the sub-flooring in her house has passed inspection.

Brian Fuller gave several bucks; 1st Happy for his father’s 64th birthday; happy because he got a job; Sad because he will not be able to make all our Kiwanis meetings; Sad because he has an ear infection that won’t go away but is going to try a remedy that Al Restivo is suggesting!

Pat Flynn a Happy buck because he took a cruise on the ‘Oasis of the  Sea’ a very, very big boat!

Frosty Boyd gave a Sad buck because a long time friend, Dale Boyd ‘graduated from this life into the next.’

Elizabeth Georgeon gave a Happy buck since she is married to a  Frenchman and all French are happy for Bastille Day which is today!

Jennifer Berger Happy because our own Linda Magarian went to  Verdugo Hills Hospital and spoke about non-profit organizations  such as our own Kiwanis Club; another Happy buck because she has advance copies  of the VHH Financial Statement, copies for any of us that would like one; and yet another Happy buck because she and  family leave Friday for their annual trek to Sweden and a visit to her husband’s side of the family.

Jim Phillips Happy because he is getting all his mom’s affairs in order.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Linda Magarian announced that she has a brochure for Habitat for hHmanity with a heart warming story by a young man who with his family now have a home and what it means to him; she passed the brochure for us to enjoy.

Pat Anderson said that the city has re-written rules for election signs and that you may now display them on the parkway in front of  your home as well as on your lawn.  The Chamber Mixer tomorrow evening from 5:30-7:30 will be sponsored by the City and it will be at Olberz Park in the Town Center with the theme of Madre Gras with  food and beverages to reflect the theme.  A great party is expected.

Howard Backer told us that we should put a buck or two in the cans in the center of our tables to support the Kiwanis Doctor’s Program.

Linda Magarian requested ‘large ticket’ items for the W&GFT’ Silent Auction such as vacation homes, cruises, time shares, etc.  But please  donate.

Joel Smith told us it was our last chance to purchase tickets to the Community Center’s Casino Night this coming Saturday night.

Bill Watts told us that Descanso Gardens will have a ‘Free Admissions Night on August 8th (I think.)

Daryal Gant stated that in the past he promised to give a ‘Century Club’  for the 100th member but he is changing that to:  ½ Century Club for the  99th member and the other ½ Century Club for the 100 member!  We are  now at 97 members.

PROGRAM

Jim Phillips introduced Dottie Sharkey a member of Glendale Parks and Recreation Commission and also a member of the newly formed ‘Parks and Open Space Foundation.’  Dottie told us about the opening gallery titled ‘Art from Ashes’ using articles removed from the Deukmejian Park that was involved in the Station Fire.  62 artists took these items and used them to create art which has been sold to raise money to support the refurbishing of the Deukmejian area; this is located in La Crescenta up New York Avenue.  The Gallery is located in Glendale across from the Americana at 261 S. Brand Boulevard and is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. and a $5 donation per person is requested.   The Gallery had a grand opening and subsequent other special showings and almost all of the art has sold.

The gallery is scheduled to close in 5 weeks but will be taken over by the Museum of Neon Art who is very happy to find a renovated art gallery.  Dottie ended her talk with a question and answer period.

FROSTY CHALLENGE:  Frosty told us one about a bumpy airplane landing; that was followed by Jennifer Berger’s knock-knock joke; then Daryal Gant told about a Bingo game on an airplane.  Prez-Elect Bill Watts declared Daryal the winner (this reporter’s table thinks Bill should check out his hearing as we thought Frosty won by a much louder response; but that is just one reporter’s opinion.)

SLA REPORT:  Dr. Frosty reported that Dick De Grey is ‘pretty good; Hal Thomas is always in good spirits as he watches the world go by his window; Norm Johnson is in excellent spirits (and we all look forward to his return to the club on Wednesdays.)  Robert Georgeon, husband of Elizabeth, is home after spending 10 scary days in hospital; Elizabeth says he is well on the way to mending.  Jim Smith is home from his 4 week hospital stay but needs to ‘take it easy’ for another month or so.  Jim & Wendy welcome you to stop by their new residence at 2555 Piedmont Avenue, on the corner of Rosemont or just to give Jim a call to say, ‘hi.’
