WEEKLY MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

MUSIC

Tom Burrows, our club pianist, played music prior to the start of the meeting.  He accompanied Ed Moulton with “God Bless America” and “Hail Kiwanis”.  “Hi Neighbor” was our greeting to guests and returning members.

OPENING

Jim Ackland led us in the flag salute.  Gigi Schlueter gave us an inspiration with lines such as “…pain is inevitable, suffering is optional… what is good in the short term is tough for us long term… what is tough in the short term is good for us in the long term… surest road to happiness is good relationships.”

GUESTS

Pat Anderson introduced us to Jackie Walls who operates Jackie’s Hair-A-Go-Go.  Jackie is joining us as a new member.

Pat also re-introduced her compatriots at the chamber: Star Fraser and June Beemer.

Welcome back to our members: Jeb Long and Harriet Hammons.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Linda Magarian tells us that Jim Smith is improving.  Doctors are optimistic as he is  in ICU recovering from sepsis.

Mary Gant is happy that her granddaughter from Saudi Arabia is here for two months for the summer.

Pat Anderson is pleased that her house is on the rebuild.  That also goes for the home of her colleague Star Fraser.

Clyde Hemphill speaks well of the Sunland Tujunga club where you can find much joy with the Harley-Davidson loving members.

Emelita Bituin is pleased with Chris Motte helping out.

Skip Boyd is happy his father, Frosty Boyd, is doing well.  He is not so happy that he is being a poor patient despite being a good doctor.

Paul Westmoreland has a neutral buck regarding a Dinuba moment.

Brian Fuller is pleased that the primary election is history and thus political ads have quieted.

Patina’s chef Jose is moving onto the Hollywood Bowl and the members collected a round of dollars as a happy sendoff.

Ken Lowe is happy to report a great scholarship sendoff of $1000 for Robert Hong at LCHS.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Mary Gant reminds us of Wine and Gourmet Food event for September 26.  The postcards have been made up.

Harriet Hammons tells us about the reading group at Union St. getting awards and also about the book drive organized by Wendy Smith.  Also the roundup to go down to the school the following morning for a reading session.

Nick Berkuta tells us of the new club t-shirts.

Howard Backer reminds us all of the Kiwanis Doctors program and to make donations to the cans on each table.

Pat Anderson tells us of the chamber mixer on June 17th sponsored by Valley Sun.

Skip Boyd gives the SLA report.  Dick DeGrey, Hal Thomas, Norm Johnson, and Jim Smith mentioned.  Jim Smith needs your prayers as he is fighting septic shock.  His wife Wendy Smith needs your support.

Frosty Challenge:  After a bunch of groaners, Rolando Morales deserves the Kudos bar for best joke.

THE PROGRAM

Skip Lindeman is our emcee for Clergy Appreciation Day.  We heard from religious leaders from a variety of faiths who were seated at our tables throughout Van De Kamp Hall.  A common theme throughout the presentation was openness and understanding of each others traditions and beliefs.  We are also pleased to know that two members of our clergy will join our club.

OTHER STUFF

Nick also introduced our Chief Caterer.

We took up a collection and presented it to him to show our gratitude.
