THE PROGRAM

Judy Reilly of Guide Dogs of America was our guest for today.  She brought with her a very special friend, Dibo.  Dibo is a soon to be four month old purebred Labrador Retriever.  One unique trait of Dibo is his rather rare color.  Most people are familiar with the yellow, black, chocolate, and perhaps silver coats but Dibo is a brindle.  Yes, he is black and tan much like that of a German Shepherd or Rottweiler.  One out of 500,000 Labs exhibit this color.  While Dibo was enjoying his bone, Judy told us of what she and Guide Dogs of America are all about.  First of all, Guide Dogs of America does not take any public funds whatsoever.  It is all private donations.  It is amazing in light of the fact that training each dog runs approximately $38,000.  And that is in the scope that only 40% of dogs become fully qualified guide dogs to the blind.  But the training is not only for the dogs but for the people who will benefit greatly from these wonderful assistants.  People who have been accepted into the program will spend 28 days at Guide Dogs of America’s facilities in San Fernando Valley to get to know how to work with their future partners.  Dibo is on his way to becoming such a partner.  Judy first has to get Dibo to be a properly trained dog in the first place.  Once he has been able to accomplish that task he is then sent off to the handlers at Guide Dogs of America.  Now if he is unable to handle it he will be returned to Judy if she wishes to adopt him.  There after he is available for adoption to folks who have put down $450 to come home with a fully trained dog.  You may have to wait though as it is a seven year waiting list.  But perhaps you wish to express your support by naming one of the dogs.  In fact Dibo is one such dog.  The Dibonetto family lost a young son this year affectionately known as Dibo.  Dibo lives on with a guide dog sporting the Guide Dogs of America cape.  One of our more popular guests, Dibo, was a good sport entertaining photos and oohs and aahs from the Key Club of La Canada High School.  We thank Judy Reilly and present to her a Kiwanis coffee mug for coming to our meeting and introducing us to wonderful Dibo.
