Kudos from the President

President Nick Berkuta gave Special kudos to Tom Burrows for producing and directing last week’s Annual Club Talent show.

Special Presentation:

President Nick Berkuta introduced Clyde Hemphill and Carl Christensen to recognize Joel Smith for the 10th and final Soap Box Derby held in May 2009.

Carl announced the following highlights during the last and final soap box derby:

Joel Smith raced against Tom Reynolds, token was presented to Joel

Meredith Reynolds raced against Mayor Laura Olhasso

Barbara Marshall and Mary Gant’s second race match off:  Barbara Marshall stood up to present Mary Gant a special belt; she stated that the first year, she won it fair and square.  The second year, Mary Gant, won by wearing heavy weight belts around her waist, the theory being that the heavier person wins.  Barbara described Mary as a Fashion Icon so she presented Mary with a much more fashionable belt to hang her weights. Mary concluded that the game should be continued for fun for the adults. Great time was had by all during the last and final Soap Box Derby.

International Committee Chair Bob Martin introduced Fil-Am Kiwanis Club Lino Caringal wih a Division 3 Outreach for the Flood Victims in the Philippines.  Lino showed slides that mirrored the devastation in the flooded areas hard hit by the flooding.  Lino appealed for financial assistance that will be used to procure food, water, clothing, etc. for the flood victims. He mentioned that several Kiwanis Clubs rose to the challenge and pledged their donations.  Bob Martin stated he is working with the Board regarding the budget. He called on Emelita Bituin to provide an impromptu background on the flooding.  Emelita stated that the areas hardly hit were the two provinces south of Manila and surrounding Laguna Lake; those are Rizal Province on the north side and Laguna Province (Emelita’s home province) on the south side. Laguna Lake is fed by river tributaries coming from the mountains and fields in Laguna Province. Emelita explained that her father, the Late Governor of Laguna Province, had foreseen the death of Laguna Lake more than four (4) decades ago due to pollution and heavy silt settlement in the bottom of the lake. The solution was to dredge the lake, the late Governor spear headed the Laguna Lake Development Authority, that was later taken over by the National Government and with heavy partisan politics, nothing happened to save the Lake. We are now seeing the devastating results of “Laguna Lake’s Death”. Twenty (20) towns under Congressman San Luis’ congressional district (San Luis is Emelita’s brother) were hardly hit; homes housing cottage industries like embroidery, wood curving were destroyed, vital sources of livelihood by farmers from fruit farms and rice fields were lost. There is a dire need for food, water, and clothing for the affected residents.
