FROSTY CHALLENGE
Dr. Frosty Boyd:
A woman brings her baby to the Doctor and he says “What a cute
baby!” She says “I bet you say that about all the baby’s you
see.” “No I don’t” says the Doctor. “What do you say when you
see a really ugly one, then?” “I say “He looks just like you.””
Dr. Skip Boyd
told a joke about an ugly baby on a plane. I couldn’t hear the
joke, but the punchline was “.. and give a banana to the
monkey.” Just the punchline alone is worth at least a modest
laugh.
Bill Watts:
An Irishman get’s off the plane and get’s his luggage. He
begins to sob uncontrollably. A flight attendant comes over to
try to comfort him. “What is the matter?” she says. “They
lost my luggage!” he exclaims. “But, sir, your luggage is
right here.” She says. “No, they lost it.. the cork came out.”
The winner was Dr. Frosty Boyd.
THE PROGRAM

Our
program for the meeting was presented by Nagin Cox,
engineer for JPL. She gave a brief overview of NASA and it’s 12
centers around the corner. JPL, it’s La Canada facility, was
private until 1958 when it was turned over to NASA as the center
for robotics.
She then spoke of the various phases of voyages. Phase I is
where the space vehicle takes a brief glimpse of it’s target and
returns. Phase II is where the space vehicle orbits the target
for a period and returns. Phase III is where the space vehicle
takes samples of the target and Phase IV is human exploration.
Much of space exploration has focused on Mars in the quest to
“follow the water”. The big questions are: “Is there water on
Mars?”, “Has there been water on Mars”, and if so, then perhaps
it could have sustained life.
The year 2003 was a significant year for Mars exploration
because Mars was closer to earth than it had been in thousands
of years. Several countries mounted exporation projects to Mars
that year. The United States sent two rovers, “Spirit” and
“Opportunity”. They made their landing early 2004. Both of
these rovers were dropped onto the surface of Mars using giant
airbags. The rovers literally “bounced” off the surface of the
planet over 25 times before coming to a stand-still. One of the
rovers bounced into a crater and into the holy grail. By
landing in a crater with exposed bedrock revealing many layers
of the planet’s surface, they were able to determine that indeed
there was, at one time, water on Mars. The second Rover
confirmed the same.
The next Mars launch is scheduled for 2011 with a projected
landing in 2012.
Nagin Cox closed the presentation with the following quote from
Ralph Waldo Emerson:
“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no
path and leave a trail.” -- -Ralph
Waldo Emerson
Thank you Nagin Cox for a very inspiring view into the
galaxies.
