THE PROGRAM

Jim Stratton introduces Graham Stumpf who gave us a presentation on his occupation: film post-production supervisor.  Hailing from Connecticut, Graham originally wanted to pursue theatre in college.  His parents thought differently and he agreed to pursue film where Northwestern provided such degrees.  After college he backpacked all over Europe.  Hollywood then called and he found himself working his way to bigger and better things.  Originally he sought work as an editor.  IRS Films and Interscope Films brought him eventually to his title of serving as Post Production Supervisor.

     Graham Stumph

In a nutshell, his job sees him akin to a general contractor or a foreman.  His involvement comes after a queue that starts with development, pre-production, and production.  The moment that a scene is completed, it is his responsibility to coordinate the needs for dailies where the cast and crew can review the day’s work on DVD.  Everything imaginable is under his direction.  Foley artists, looping sessions, title artwork, color temperature, etc.  It is typically a six to twelve month run.   And it is a job that demands quick adjustments so that the movie can reshoot scenes demanded by test audiences.  It is these last minute adjustments that make a budget a challenge to meet , if rarely.  Outside influences such as labor unions, community involvement, and government tax regulations are alongside the wants and needs of the inside influences of studio, director and producer.  Graham Stumpf has been involved in such films as 8 Mile, About a Boy, Motorcycle Diaries, Dead Man Walking, Nacho Libre, and Dark Water.  He is currently working on an animated feature, Furry Vengeance.  We thank Graham for his talk with our own presentation of a Kiwanis coffee mug to him.
