WEEKLY MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
MUSIC
Tom Burrows
on piano. Ed Moulton started us off with “God Bless
America”. We had ourselves some interclubs from Key Club,
Glendale and La Crescenta-Montrose and two rousing renditions of
“High Neighbor” were thus called for. Closed out with Ed once
again leading us this time to “Hail Kiwanis”.
OPENING
Carl Christensen
was away and thus the illustrious Nick Berkuta held the
gavel.

Daryal Gant
gave us an
invocation that spoke highly of the golden rule, “do unto others
as you would have them do unto you.” Great men of the past
such as Abraham Lincoln and John Wesley spoke of the power of
helping others and that it is a calling that must be heeded.
“Life is what happens while making plans.” “Humans tend to make
life complicated.”
Special guest for this meeting is the presence of our Lt.
Governor, Richard
Slavett
.

THE PROGRAM

Bob Ericson, Dr Thorpe, and Wendy Smith
Bob Erickson
introduces us to Dr. Andrea Thorpe, Pediatrics of Loma
Linda Hospital. She is the Asst. Program
Director for Kiwanis Doctors. Emergency Pediatrics is the
focus. Dr. Thorpe expresses her excitement at her involvement
with the program. Just this past month the Kiwanis Doctors have
graduated themselves a second doctor from the program, Dr.
Timothy Young on July 1st. The program is one to
build upon success where graduates can lead new entrants to
their own completion. July is a month of change. Residences
start and end. Where just a month ago a protégé is under a wing
of a senior, now they are put in full responsibility. Dr.
Thorpe tells of the story of how children as patients are a
different read than adults. One child in particular was a
challenge for a less than seasoned doctor and could not
ascertain the exact location of an injury. Dr. Thorpe noted the
patient’s fascination with Disney characters as evidenced by her
clothing. Once a connection was established she was able to
gain the trust and establish a dialogue with her patient to
where she correctly diagnosed injury as being to her foot.
Emergency care is not only a concern for adults but also for
children. Heart-wrenching stories are a common occurrence. One
was of a distraught mother who had accidentally run over her 22
month old child. Fortunately the injuries were not as
devastating as initially believed. The professionals at Loma
Linda did their job with much care for the patient’s well-being
and that of the mother’s. The program is demonstrating a great
return from the investment on the part of Kiwanis. Bold efforts
have yield bold results. And yes they continue to look into
bringing into the fold more members but they want quality not
quantity. A passion on the part of the applicants is a must as
they have had to pass on a couple of final applicants that
otherwise would have qualified. Rather they waited for the next
season. Dr. Thorpe believes she has found one in this season’s
pool of applicants.
