WEEKLY MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
MUSIC
To start the meeting, Ed
led the club in “America the Beautiful” while Tom accompanied.
Later, Ed led the club in a round of “Hi Neighbor” to welcome
our guests. At the end of the meeting, Ed reminded us of all the
important service we provide as a club as we sang “C’mon
Kiwanis”.
OPENING
Al Restivo led the club
in saluting our great flag and Pat Anderson gave a
to-the-point and crowd-pleasing prayer; “Praise the Lord and
pass the biscuits. Amen!”
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Carl Christensen and
Clyde Hemphill presented Al Restivo with a beautiful
certificate and pin commemorating his 30 years as a Kiwanian.

Nick reminded the club
that next week (August 5th), the Kiwanis doctor would
be coming to speak, and to contribute to the cans in the center
of our tables. Also, an interclub opportunity with the Eagle
Rock club on Aug. 9 from noon to 3pm, will benefit the Kiwanis
House in Sacramento.
Diane announced the date
of the installation dinner will be Wednesday, September 30.
There will be no Kiwanis lunch that day.
Mary reminded the club of
the upcoming Wine & Gourmet Food event, Sunday, September 20
from 2-5pm. She displayed beautiful
posters, flyers and post cards printed by Glen Pettit.
Melinda reminded everyone
to donate their used printer cartridges to her, as she’s
recycling them and raising money for our club.
Jim Ackland reminded us
about the upcoming Travel Logue series.
Bill Sherkey announced
Wine & Gourmet Food event tickets are now on sale, and to see
him if anyone needs more than the 4 tickets they were assigned.
However, Jim Philips would be the man to see while Bill is away
during the next few weeks.
Frosty announced Dick
DeGrey is doing better and always appreciates a friendly
phone call from time to time. Also, Hal Thomas is feeling
better.

the Glendale City Council and their 4 to 1 vote opposing the 710
tunnel project.

Arabia, the news of her granddaughter being accepted to Medical
School, and her grandson’s water polo team earning 2nd place medals
at the summer’s Junior Olympics.

Clyde Hemphill gave happy
bucks to Cory for organizing an excellent summer social!
Al Restivo

THE
PROGRAM
This week’s program focused on
the administrative committees helping to run our club.
Website,
led by Jeb Long, includes more than just maintaining
www.lacanadakiwanis.org. Jeb works to compile the growing
data base of members with names & pictures, the club’s calendar,
events, posting the weekly bulletin and the list of club
officers.

Attendance,
led by George Lutes, submits reports to the Board
Secretary, who then submits to Kiwanis International.
Hospitality/Welfare,
led by Bachy Bachmayer, is primarily in charge of
greeting the club’s members and guests.

House Committee,
led by Skip Boyd, is in charge of set-up and take-down of
our delicious lunches. He coordinates with our caterers and
Descanso Gardens.

New Membership Acquisition,
led by Linda Magarian, has 2 primary goals: to recruit
members and to retain members! Last year’s membership drive
earned the club 18 new members! This year’s goal is to reach 100
members, so Linda reminded all of us: Membership is a team
effort!
Membership Records,
led by Paul Westmoreland, has the job of collecting data
on the members and compiling the club’s blue directory,
including printing and distributing. He also completes the
monthly activity report and submits to the Board secretary.
Music,
led by Tom Burrows and Ed Moulton, is. just that:
Music! Tom reminded the club how important singing and the sound
of piano playing can help set the tome for each meeting.
Newsletter,
led by Norm Johnson, is all about recruiting the
reporters. Norm provides a template for note taking and every 2
weeks, a new guest reporter is responsible for keeping track of
what happens during our meetings.
Publicity,
led by Paul Westmorland, keeps the community aware of the
club’s many events. Paul writes and submits press releases to
the local newspapers, along with pictures and captions. Elle
Wildermuth leads the scrapbook committee.
Sick/Lame/Ailing,
led by Frosty Boyd is all about making members feel warm,
cared for, and missed when they are away.
Parliamentarian,
led by Clyde Hemphill, must know the rules! Clyde’s
primary job is to remind the Board what the rules are and
helping to update out-dated bylaws & articles of incorporation.
Administration,
led by Bill Sherkey, is like the “go-to” committee. When
another committee needs help, volunteers, or advice, they can
come to Admin.
Ed Moulton’s Endowment Fund,
led by Bill Sherkey, is currently up to $16,631. The
club’s goal is to reach $25,000 by this time next year. Bill
reminded the club of the many ways to contribute to the fund. In
addition, the first 5 members (or anyone else for that matter)
to contribute $800 to the fund, will have $200 added to their
contribution by Fred Schooley and their name on the Ed
Moulton’s Endowment Fund Plaque!
