THE PROGRAM
This week’s program
focused on the MANY committees the club has in connection with
the Kiwanis Foundation.
Community Services,
led by Mike Leininger, is in charge of the annual holiday
tree-lighting in Glenola Park, the “Feed the Floaters” dinner
during the annual float building, the annual “serve-a-thon” at
LCHS, the hamburger stand at Memorial Park during Fiesta Days,
and the La Cañadan of the Year lunch. In addition, if another
committee is looking for volunteers, the Community Services
committee will assist in finding them.
International
Understanding Committee,
led by Bob Martin, Joan Peters, and Ken Lowe,
deals primarily with projects outside the US. The Guatemalan
Fund, focusing on dental clinics & schools, the Sleeping
Children Around the World project, the Bulgarian Orphanage, and
allocating funds for Marie Collins recent lap-tops in Africa
project are just a few ways this committee gets involved with
the children of the world.
Human & Spiritual
Value Committee,
led by Charles Broberg and Glen Pettit, organize
the annual clergy day, recognizing the local clergy leaders.
Youth Services,
led by Bachy Bachmayer, accepts requests from local
organizations (disconnected from Kiwanis) seeing funding. The
CCYMCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the Community Center of LCF
have been recipients of Kiwanis money in the past.
Youth Programs,
led by Pat Flynn, focuses on the recognition of the
“terrific kids” in 2 local elementary schools (Palm Crest and La
Cañada Elementary).
K-Kids,
led by George Lutes, is a student-run service
organization for 5th & 6th graders in our
local elementary schools. Unfortunately, our club does not
sponsor any K-Kids clubs at this time.
Builder’s Club,
led by Rolando Morales and Bryan Swartz, is a
community service club for junior high students at LCHS. The
kids and advisors meet weekly to discuss ways to give back to
their community as volunteers and through fundraisers, as well
as to organizations around the world.
Key Clubs,
led by Ken Lowe at LCHS and Joan Peters at
Flintridge Prep, are a way for high school students to give back
to those in their community and to organizations serving
children around the world. In recent years, these clubs have
helped to raise money for Unicef, the March of Dimes, and The
Children’s Miracle Network to name a few.
Children’s Literacy
Program,
led by Harriet Hammons and Linda Magarian, began
by collecting and donating books to local schools. Now, after 5
years, volunteers from our club meet weekly to read to children
at Union Avenue Elementary School in downtown LA. Currently,
there are 9 classes participating in the program.
Travel Adventure
Series,
led by Jim Ackland, was started 50 years ago by Ed
Moulton. There are 6 programs scheduled for the coming year.
Soap Box Derby,
led by Joel Smith, has been a club project for 10 years and has
finally ended. It was a true community event, involving the
City, residents, scouting groups, local football players, the
riding stables, and more than 50 child-racers.
New Projects
Committee,
led by Diane Della Valle, listens to potential new
fundraisers, service projects, and organizations that could use
our club’s help.

Wine & Gourmet Food
Event Committee,
led by Mary Gant and Clyde Hemphill, has become
the club’s largest fundraiser of the year! This 7 year old event
hosts more than 20 food & wine vendors and close to 800
attendees in Memorial Park. The event also includes a silent
auction and premium wine auction.
