WEEKLY MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

MUSIC

While Tom Burroughs was providing the lovely background music before lunch, one piece inspired Wendy Smith and Harriet Hammons and the two of them briefly broke into song.  Ed Moulton led the singing.  We started the meeting with God Bless America and ended the meeting with America the Beautiful.

OPENING

Paul Westmoreland opened the meeting today, filling in for our club officers who were on their way to the International Kiwanis Convention in Nashville.  Past Prez Paul hasn't lost his touch, and the meeting proceeded without a hitch.  Paul asked Eagle Scout Dan Warren to lead the flag salute and Bill Scherkey gave the invocation.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ø  Next Wednesday will be SPECIAL GUEST DAY.  Linda Magarian encouraged each of us to bring a guest to hear the interesting program about Midnight MissionLinda will need to give our caterer, Patina, a head count on Monday morning, so please send Linda an email by Monday morning to let her know how many guests you are bringing.  (Linda's son is getting married this weekend, so don't try to call her!)

Ø  Jennifer Berger alerted us to an upcoming meeting at Verdugo Hills Hospital focusing on resources for students leaving for college and their parents.  Call Jennifer for details:  818-952-2226.

Ø  The 2009-2010 Travel Adventure films have been scheduled, and Jim Ackland let us know more information will be available soon.

Ø  Frosty Boyd gave his SLA report.

GUESTS

Bill Hackett joined us again.  He was representing Anthony Portantino in two roles today - as his Assembly Field Representative and also as pseudo dad.  Anthony's daughter, Sofia, was one of our Girl Scout Gold Awardee guests today.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

·     Cory Stevens had a Happy Buck for Linda Magarian because Linda's son is getting married this weekend.

·     Mark Alexander announced the LCF City Council completed the budget hearings and adopted a balanced budget.  Definitely worth a Happy Buck to Mark.

·     Pat Anderson gave a Happy Buck in honor of the excellent work being done by Mark Alexander and the City Council.

·     Jack Dawson used his Happy Buck as an excuse to suggest that Mark Alexander should run for governor.

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES

Paul accused George Lutes of having a birthday, but George responded that someone should be fined for giving Paul that misinformation.  Actually, George celebrated his anniversary this month.

Then Pat Flynn offered that he did have a birthday this month - even if that info wasn't given to Paul.  In spite of the oversight, Pat joined the Century Club.

TERRIFIC KIDS

Tom Slaughter helped us celebrate the accomplishments of the four Terrific Kids who joined us today from Palm Crest.  These sixth graders were selected by their teachers for their Terrific self-discipline, cooperation, and community spirit.  The four boys had a chance to introduce their parents, and then Tom provided special details.

v              Jared Garcia enjoys school and working with his classmates and teachers.  He likes all subjects but perhaps likes reading best.  Jared enjoys music and plays the trumpet in the school band.  He enjoys playing soccer at Y Camp and is working out in wrestling.  Jared is a Boy Scout and is working on his merit badges and wants to be an Eagle Scout.

v              Albert Han is working hard at becoming familiar with Southern California and improving his English.  He enjoys school and his favorite subject is math.  In January he received the Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Award!  Albert studied car design at Pasadena Art Center.  He is fascinated with rock music, plays the piano and sings.  He likes spending time with his classmates and volunteers to help his teachers.

v              Christopher Harb likes supporting his schoolmates and is a friend with everyone he meets.  His favorite subjects are science and marine biology.  Christopher plays football for the Gladiators and has earned a red belt in Tae-Kwon-Do.

v              Josh Cabello's favorite subject is math, but he also enjoys art, likes to draw, and likes to write stories.  He enjoys sports - especially track - and likes to hang out with his friends and help his teachers.  Josh plans on running on the Middle School team next year.

v              Olivia Markowitz was unable to join us today.  However, Pat Flynn found out that Olivia enjoys reading and helps her teachers and her classmates.  She plays soccer and is a member of the Villa Park AYSO team.  Olivia "bridged" with her Girl Scout troop by walking across the Golden Gate Bridge and is working toward her Silver Award.  She plays the guitar and is a member of the Spartan basketball club.

It was great to have these Terrific Kids join us for lunch today, and we applauded their Terrific Parents!

THE PROGRAM

Ken Lowe was the master of ceremonies as we honored a large group of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts today for their special accomplishments.  Each of the Girl Scouts had earned her Gold Award and all the boys were Eagle Scouts.   Girl Scout leader Christy Francis presented our Kiwanis Club with a certificate from the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles recognizing our club as a Benefactor of Girl Scouts.  Christy told us there are over 1,000 Girl Scouts in La Canada and 54 girls earned their Gold Award this year!  Club member Carlos Cortez is also the Executive Director of the San Gabriel Boy Scout Council, and he provided an overview of local Boy Scout activity and mentioned the San Gabriel Boy Scout Council will be 90 years old.  Twenty boys in La Canada became Eagle Scouts this year.   Club member Harriet Hammons is very active in both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and she gave everyone a warm welcome.

Ken had each Scout explain their community service project, and the variety of projects was fascinating and admirable.  It was also very interesting to hear what each Scout felt was their most memorable scouting activity.
