Craft Talk

President Carl Christensen introduced Wendy Alane Smith who presented her craft talk.

Wendy provided the members with an incredibly amazing background centered in the entertainment industry!!

•    Born in New York
•    Grew up in Connecticut from age 3 -21.
•    Started in the theatre at age 9. Wendy never stopped performing, acted in community theatre until     she was 21.
•    Attended Southern Ct State College; majored in Psychology.
•    Father was Professor Emeritus there- cost $100 per semester!
•    Wrote for the school newspaper the Southern News.
•    Moved to California in 1990 to pursue a career in the music business.
•    Was discovered by a Dutch producer who flew her to Europe and made her lead singer of a group called Def La Desh
•    Wendy’s first single was a top 20 hit throughout Europe. Music videos on MTV, BET and VH1
•    Lived outside of Amsterdam for 4 years; singing, touring, writing songs for people and herself. She had 3 more hit records, went gold in Scandinavia and sold records all over the world.
•    Came back to the US in 1994. Performed with her own blues band for many years
•    Sang with Art Deco and His Society Orchestra as well as with Bob Gail Orchestras at numerous fundraisers for orphanages in Mexico, at the Byzantine Investiture of Royalty- kings and queens from around the world and as well as tributes to celebrities like Gregory Hines.
•    Sang a lot in Beverly Hills at very exclusive events and many celebrity events.
•    Opened for the Four Tops (there were only 3 left), Rose Royce did backing vocals for Candy Dulfer, Wayne Brady, Philip Michael Thomas, worked with Little Richard, Billie Myers – a lot of contemporary Artists and did 4 Verizon commercials.
•    Between gigs her Day Job for 10 years was as the assistant to the CEOS of several major entertainment companies- publicist Lee Solters and Wendy represented Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton, and Barbra Streisand. She worked at Fox television in Development, worked at Virgin Records in Music Licensing, for The President of Beyond Music who represented The Bee Gees, Meatloaf, The Cranberries etc. Later on she became a Talent Agent herself - eventually opening her own talent agency.
•   She always had a special interest in Children – She became the clothing Minister at Agape International Church for several years and was in charge of collecting clothes for the Homeless. She fed homeless kids and families every Saturday morning in front of City Hall in Santa Monica.
• Later on, when she decided to break away from the entertainment industry, she took a job in a corporate design and construction company. Jim Smith hired and trained her. Some of their well known clients are Carl’s Jr., Pet Co, Aramark, Disney and the Sears Tower. Wendy really enjoyed learning a new business and getting into construction - building custom homes– creating something from nothing – it’s like writing a song, she quipped.

Wendy and Jim were married in 2005 and it was a great decision to marry the boss, she says. “I can do no wrong – and work whenever I want to”.

Wendy still runs her own talent agency- her beautiful daughter is a model and one of her clients- “I teach Voice lessons to children on television. I produced 3 of my own music CDs in the past 3 years”.

Wendy was on a TV show for 5 weeks in 2007; wrote a book which was published last year and went on the Oprah Show last April talking about the Laws of Attraction.

Wendy and Jim are adopting a 4-7 year old girl and hope to have her this year. They have sponsored children for years with The Christian Children’s Fund and are honorary ambassadors for UNICEF.

Wendy is a proud member of Kiwanis: she is grateful to be serving others with such a great group of people who care about children and making the world a better place for children.

Her passion:     To teach children how to be of service to their communities
Her Goal:         To spend the rest of her life helping other people, traveling to other countries on short     Missionary Trips and getting right on the front line when it comes to combating child starvation.

Her Dream:      To see every 5th grade class in America sponsor a hungry child. It’s $25 a month; this will mirror a whole country of children caring about children throughout the world.
