THE PROGRAM

Republican
US Congressman David Dreier has represented the 26th
District of California in the U.S. House of Representatives
since 1981. Dreier was born July 5, 1952 in Kansas City,
Missouri. His family continues to be active in real estate
development; he is Vice President of Dreier Development Company
in Kansas City. He graduated with a BA from Claremont Men’s
College (now Claremont McKenna College) in 1975 and an MA from
the Claremont Graduate School in 1976. He was director of
corporate relations for Claremont McKenna College before
entering the House in 1981. According to Roll Call magazine,
Dreier has a personal fortune in excess of $7.5 million.
David
Drier
is a witty man with a good sense of humor, I found him to be
direct and passionate and well received by the Kiwanis group. He
began his presentation by leading “a moment of silence for the
tragedy that struck our neighborhood” two weeks ago when a big
rig careened out of control down from the Angeles Crest Highway
running over a car, resulting in two fatalities and 14 injuries,
three of them critical.
Congressman
Drier pledged to work with LCF Mayor Laura Olhasso to solve the
problem of traffic coming down out of the Los Angeles crest
highways. He suggests old fashion signs may be the answer rather
then high tech GPS Satellite Systems. Congressman Drier
recommitted his commitment to protect our safety.
He continued
by cracking a few jokes including ”any public servant standing
in front of a group of people on April 15 Tax day is taking a
risk.” Then followed with a “Dear Abbey joke along the lines of
a family that was embarrassed by her parents, siblings and
cousin. One was an alcoholic, one was drug addict they were just
unscrupulous people. But she was most embarrassed by one in
particular and didn’t know what to do about it. When asked which
one, she stated, my cousin the Congressman. (Not word for word –
but you get the drift- David Drier's humour.)
Mr. Dreier
said you have to be skeptic of politicians, but he prefers
skepticism rather than corrosive cynicism.
He added
more personal anecdotes about playing the Eater Bunny on Easter
weekend for young kids and impressively let us know on many of
Dr. Seuss's birthdays he reads Green Eggs and Ham to 2nd
graders.
Throughout
his presentation he moved eloquently back and forth between
charm and serious issues. Such as his stance on the current
administrations quest for Bi-Partisanship. He believes
government should be putting forth the 1961 model by “Kennedy
which states you can not grow the economy by increasing
government expenditures, you must grow public enterprise. He
considers himself a Kennedy Republican. He believes taking on
this huge deficit spending is counter intuitive and wrong.
Congressman
Drier Concluded his speech with the statement “We are going to
get our economy back on track because we are the greatest
country the world has ever known, but we are going to do it –in
spite of the current administrations policies, not because of
them.
Mr. Drier
took questions and answers from the group on diverse issues such
as fiscal policy, business provisions and the fair and simple
tax code.
Mayor
Laura Olhasso
addressed Kiwanis about the fast response from Emergency teams
who came to handle the crisis and praised their efforts. She
believes there are several steps towards preventing a crisis
like this is the future including the temporary ban that has
been placed on certain vehicles coming over the highway, She
intends for the ban to be made permanent, reconstitution of
Medians, and suggests GPS systems include in their maps the
roads that are not viable for trucks.
At the end
of the speaker presentation Carl Christensen presented
Congressman David Dreier the esteemed Kiwanis CUP.
To lead our
meeting out Ed Moulton and Tom Burrows sang Hail
Kiwanis! And another fantastic meeting was complete!
