HAVEN’T
YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO BE IMMORTAL?
Our cost of
immortality is normally $1,000.
But on March 25, 2009, a member’s $500 donation to the Ed
Moulton Endowment Fund before 2 p.m. will be matched by an
unknown contributor and the member donor will be given
immortality status on the Ed Moulton Plaque displayed at every
meeting. Further, the member donor will receive:
1.
the title “Ed Moulton Endowment Colleague” and
2.
an income tax deduction, and
3.
the satisfaction of knowing that his or her donation will
never be spent, but the interest and dividends earned on his or
her contribution will support numerous La Canada Kiwanis
charitable causes.
The donation of $500
is to be paid with a personal check written to the La Canada
Kiwanis Foundation with the Ed Moulton Endowment Fund specified
on the lower left. The check is to be given to and recorded by
the Finance and Investment Committee Chairman before the 2 p.m.
deadline on March 25, 2009.

PROGRAM

Richard Slavett
Nick Berkuta
introduced Kiwanis Division 3 Lieutenant Governor Richard
Slavett. Richard was first introduced to Kiwanis in high school
and became president of the Glendale High School Key Club.
While attending Glendale College, he became the Charter
President of the Circle K Club. He is also a graduate of USC.
He joined the Kiwanis Club of Glendale in 1982 and was Club
President in 2004-2005.
In addition to
providing his personal account as a survivor of the Metrolink
train crash, Richard also provided insight into his role as a
Kiwanis leader. He discussed the goals of the Cal-Nev-Ha
District Governor, Dan Connolly, specifically, team work,
generating enthusiasm, taking action, increasing membership, and
giving support to all Kiwanis organizations and the foundation.
He stressed that nothing is impossible, if we put our minds to
it.
In his talk, “Story
of Survival,” Richard described the events leading up to his
decision to take an early train home on the afternoon of
September 12, 2008. This was the ill-fated Metrolink train that
crashed with a Union Pacific freight train leaving 25 dead and
135 injured, 40 of them critically. Richard described his own
emotional response to the devastation, the heroic actions of the
emergency response teams who performed the grueling work of
extracting the dead and injured from the tangled mountain of
steel, and his life changing response to these events.
Fortunately, Richard’s physical injuries from the accident are
healing well.
