OPENING

MUSIC

After leading us in “My Country tis of Thee,” Tom Burrows reminded us that the song was written by Samuel Francis Smith to the tune of “God Save the Queen,” which is the British National anthem.  He then read the words to the second, third, and forth verses.  Ed Moulton led all the other songs.

Joan Peters led us in the Flag Salute.

Linda Magarian announced a new fun way we could get to know each other better.  Each meeting a member will have a spotlight on them (after agreeing to participate) and will tell a brief story about something that happened to them or perhaps something about themselves that no one in the club knows.  As an example, Linda related a story about getting her arm caught in the wringer of her mother’s washing machine when she was a little girl.  The “real” spotlight was on Mary Gant, who also related a childhood story.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Nick Berkuta reported that our Chairman of the SLA Committee had become the subject of his own report by passing out during the Interclub with La Canada AM that morning, but he’s fine now.

Gigi Schlueter reminded everyone that the La Canadan of the Year Recognition Luncheon is scheduled for May 6.  Reservations are necessary due to the large number of guests that are expected.

Howard Backer reminded everyone to put their donation for the Pediatric Trauma Doctor Training Program into the tubs in the centers of the tables.

Pat Anderson announced the upcoming Chamber Mixer which will be held at La Canada Auto Repair, and owner Bob Upton promises a Mexican Fiesta.  743 Foothill Blvd., Thursday,  5:30 pm, March 19.

Dave Spence announced that Mary Hastings passed away.  Her husband Jack was a popular past mayor of La Canada.

Nick also announced that our Lt. Governor, Richard Slavett, will visit us next week, and will tell the story of his survival in the Metro link Train Wreck.

GUESTS

Our speaker Brigitte Benchino was accompanied by Tracy Gilbert.

 Brion Zimmerman brought Orlando Sanchez.

And our website brought Sue Taulik, a teacher in LCUSD who was previously honored by us at  our Apple for the Teacher luncheon two or three years ago.  Welcome to all!

HAPPY AND SAD BUCKS

Elizabeth Georgeon was happy that she didn’t have a wringer experience as a child.

Paul Westmoreland was sad to say he had a similar wringer experience.

Daryl Gant was happy that Dinuba has voted to disallow medical marijuana in the town.

Mark Alexander was happy to say that the City of La Canada will vote on that moratorium on weed.

Ellie Wildermuth was sad to report she caught her fingers in the electric beater as a child.

Pat Anderson was very happy to report that she and Mark Alexander will be working together to assist new and old La Canada businesses in saving money in these tough times.

Dave Spence gave $10 happy bucks because he won’t have to vote on the marijuana issue because he’ll be in DC.

Diane gave two used happy bucks to acknowledge that Linda’s first Kiwanis Mixer was a terrific success and a lot of fun.

Nick gave a happy buck because Margaret Watts is home from the hospital with her broken hip, and explained that is why Bill is not here.

 THE PROGRAM

Brigitte Benchino.

The program was presented by an author of children’s books, Brigitte Benchino.  She told the story of Jadyn and the Magic Bubble from her book by the same name.  The book cleverly introduces the reader to geography, social studies, history, math, multi-cultural relationships, cooking, spirituality, and more.  She has found it very popular with children from first through sixth grade, a wide audience.
