THE PROGRAM

Larry Welk
Larry Welk
presented a fascinating talk, “Reporting Disasters Over LA From
the Sky. “ Larry broadcasts news reports on Los Angeles
disasters, car chases and other major events as he cruises the
skies by helicopter.
Larry got
the flying bug while attending the U.S. International University
in San Diego where he pumped fuel at the airport to pay for his
flying lessons. He was offered a job by the L.A. News Service
as a cameraman and pilot where he covered major events such as
the L.A. riots, the O.J. Simpson chase, and floods in the
Sepulveda Basin in 1992. He participated in the rescue of a
woman who was drowning in the basin and actually jumped out of
the helicopter to save her. He has also supported other rescue
efforts. Larry has been honored by the L.A. City Council and
the L.A. Press Club for heroism.
In 1996
Larry went to work for KCBS and KCAL TV (Channels 2 and 9) where
he has been chief pilot for 12 years. He also started his own
helicopter company, Angel City Air, where he does production
work for Entertainment tonight, Paramount Pictures as well as
L.A. news programs. He has won five Emmys for his work and a
National Sports Emmy.
Larry
lives in La Canada with his wife of 16 years, five cats, two
