MUSIC
Tom Burrows played
our background music as we arrived to our meeting and then he
accompanied Ed Moulton as Ed led us in our singing. The songs
we sang today were America The Beautiful, Hi Neighbor and Come
On Kiwanis. Thank you Tom and Ed for always doing such a great
job!
OPENING
Bob Martin led us in
the Pledge of Allegiance
Jack Dawson’s words
of inspiration today were from his reading of the Gettysburg
Address in honor of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday.
.
At the beginning of
our business meeting, Prez Carl explained to us why our lunch today
was smaller in terms of the amount of food we were served. Due
to rising costs, Patina notified the board that they will have
to increase the cost for each lunch. The board decided to try
an option where Patina would not serve us bread at lunch and
instead of having a salad and a vegetable at every lunch they
would alternate having a salad one week and a vegetable the next
week. By doing this, our cost per lunch hopefully would not
have to be increased. Carl invited the members to e-mail him
their thoughts on this situation so that he could share them
with the board members at the board meeting tomorrow night.

HAPPY AND SAD BUCKS:

Emilita Bituin gave
five happy bucks because she was given her permanent membership badge by Linda Magarian today.

THE PROGRAM:
Bill Watts
introduced our guest speaker, Christina, “Tina” Zdawczyk who
came to speak to us about her Girl Scout Gold Award Project,
Recycle Me Please.

Christina Zdawczyk
Recycle Me Please
is about donating body organs or tissue. Tina explained to us
that there were two ways one could register to become an organ
donor. One is by checking a box on the DMV registration and the
other way is on line registration. Tina said that there are
100,000 people waiting for organs and that people whose lives
could be saved from an organ donor are dying due to the lack of
organs. There is no age limit on being an organ donor. For
Tina’s Gold Award Project she would like to register fifty
people into the organ donor registry.
Tina introduced
us to Darell Robb a liver transplant recipient who shared his
compelling story with us. Darell is a Vietnam Veteran who
received a blood transfusion because of injuries he suffered
during the war. In 1990, Darell went for a routine physical and
his test results indicated that he had been exposed to Hepatitis
B. In 2005, Darell had flu symptoms and when he went in to see
his doctor, he was advised to go across the street and admit
himself into the Northridge Hospital to be seen by a liver
specialist.

Speakers Christina Zdawczyk and Darrell Robb

Darell was
transferred to UCLA for an evaluation for a liver transplant.
His name was placed on the liver transplant list and since he
was responding well to the medicine he was given, he was sent
home. However, that evening he became violently ill and
returned to UCLA where he lapsed into a coma for six days. When
he awoke, he was told that he had received a new liver. His
name had been moved to the top of the liver donating list
because of his failing health. Most patients only live around
four days in the type of coma that Darell was in and he feels
extremely blest to have survived that long and to be a liver
transplant recipient.
Many members in our Kiwanis Club
are already members of the organ donor registry. If you are
interested in helping Tina reach her goal of registering 50
organ donors, you can go to donatelifecalifornia.org/register/
First complete the form, then under “How did you hear about….”
Choose, “Girl Scouts – Tina’s Project”.
