ANNOUNCEMENTS

Nick announced, for those who didn’t already know, that our club was honored as Organization of the Year by the La Canada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce at their Annual Installation of Officers and Awards Dinner  last Thursday at the Oakmont Country Club.  The event was well attended by our club with 22members and guests.  Nick stated that we received numerous certificates of recognition from various dignitaries and one from the Chamber. He suggested that since our member and CEO of the Chamber, Pat Anderson, had forgotten to sign our award that she should be fined. She countered with a fine of equal amount for Nick because he had failed to bring the certificate with him so she could sign it.

Pat Anderson

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

·        Tom Burrows was  happy because his granddaughter Michele was named Miss La Canada. In fact, he was so happy that he joined the Century Club.

·        Paul Westmoreland was happy to announce that JPL was recognized for 50 years in the U.S. Space Program at the awards dinner.

·        Pete Palermo contributed $10 happy bucks to celebrate his healed femur.

·        Steve Hagerty was happy about something I didn’t catch.

·        Clyde Hemphill had a happy buck to see Daryal with no bruises after everything he said about his absent wife last week. (But we should check him out again next week after that remark).

·        Tom Slaughter had a sad buck for Howard Backer because Howard thinks he can get away with putting his pin on his badge so he never forgets it.

·        Howard Backer had a sad buck for Tom because he was jealous that he didn’t think of it first.

 ·        Daryal Gant  gave a happy buck.

·        Pat Anderson  gave a happy buck because Nick forgot to bring the La Canada Kiwanis certificate  that she forgot to sign..

THE PROGRAM

Roddy Stephensen

The program was presented by Rody Stephensen, whose Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering didn’t help him in his presentation of Wagner’s four famous Ring Operas,  which go together and were described by Doctor Stephensen as a ‘massive work of art’.  These operas will be presented at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and will also be broadcast in High-def in locations in Burbank and Alhambra.  The four operas depict the four cycles of life.  The first relates the creation of space, and the last illustrates the end of the earth, with incest, adultery, and murder in between.  The series of operas if often referred to as “Star Wars for Adults”.  They will first be presented separately, and then again as a cycle with all four operas being presented in the space of six days.  The operas are presented in their original German, but the words are projected in English on stage.  Dr. Stephensen belongs to a group called “The Ring Heads” which, as you can imagine, is a group of fans of Wagner’s Ring Operas.  Jack Dawson invited all who are interested to his home next Tuesday, January 27, for refreshments and to hear more about the Ring Operas from the Doctor.
