OPENING

Music: Wendy Smith led the singing of God Bless America with piano accompaniment by Tom Burrows.

Don Voss led the flag salute and Mary Gant provided inspirational thoughts for the New Year.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Carl Christensen reminded members that the next Kiwanis Board Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 8, at the La Canada Community Center, beginning at 7 p.m.  Carl Christensen gave a special thanks to Tom for his continued contributions in providing the gift of music to our programs and meetings.

Mike Leininger requested volunteers to help take down holiday lights at Memorial Park on Thursday, January 15 at 9 a.m.

Clyde Hemphill thanked volunteers who set up and served dinner to the LCF Tournament of Roses float workers.

The La Canada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce has named our Kiwanis Club “Organization of the Year.”  The awards dinner will be held at Oakmont Country Club on Thursday, January 15. Anyone interested in attending should contact Nick Berkuta.

Harriet Hammons encouraged members to get involved with the Literacy Program.  Those interested should contact Pat Flynn.  Books were distributed to 63 students in December.

Jeb Long has posted Kiwanis Holiday Party pictures taken by Paul Westmoreland on the Kiwanis website. 

Howard Backer reminded members to support the Doctors Program through contributions into the collection cans at each table.

Nick Berkuta has been in contact with Skip Boyd, son of Frost and Fran.  Fran is now convalescing at home. 

Jack Dawson’s wife, Barbara, will have heart surgery tomorrow.

Dick and Shirley DeGrey are now at home.

FINES

Fines were collected from those not wearing their Kiwanis pin.  Howard Baker suggested a $5 fine to Carl Christensen for forgetting to bring the President’s gavel to the meeting.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Fred Schooley - $1 for a successful medical procedure this week to eliminate heart flutter.

 

Howard Backer - $20 for Bowl Game wins - $10 for Rutgers and $10 for University of Missouri.

 

Carl Christensen – $1 for the birth of a new granddaughter on December 31.  Carl is also expecting the birth of another grandchild at any time.

 

Clyde Hemphill – $1 for a successful “Under the Bridge” dinner and a great float (“Mary’s Float)!

 

Gigi Schlueter  - $1 for her step-son’s planned proposal at the Eiffel Tower on New Year’s Eve; however, he ended up having back surgery on that day due to a fall.

 

Daryal Gant - $5 for completion of Mary’s term as President of LCF Tournament of Roses – he is happy to see her around the house more frequently.

 

Jeb Long – $5 for University of Texas Longhorns bowl win and sad bucks for Ellie’s team loss (Ohio State).

 

Mary Ann Berkuta - $1 for Fred Schooley’s successful medical procedure.

 

Beverly DeLucia (guest) - $1 for her daughter’s Girl Scouts Gold Award (equivalent to Boy Scouts Eagle Scout Award).

 

Tom Burrows - $10 for USC Trojan Band who helped the football team win the Rose Bowl.

 

Mary Gant - $20 for an award-winning float and for the hundreds of volunteers who supported this successful effort.

 

 

SPECIAL PRESENTATION

Linda Magarian led the induction of two new members, Wendy Smith, sponsored by Diane DellaValle, and Brian Schwartz sponsored by Rolando Morales.  Attendees sang You’re In Kiwanis Now to welcome the new members.  Diane received a silver pin for sponsoring her second new members this year and Rolando received a brass pin for sponsoring his first new member.

THE PROGRAM

 

Bill Watts, Program Chair, introduced Vince Luculano, YMCA Director of Youth and Teen Programs, and speaker, Jeff Baker.  Jeff discussed his long association with the Crescenta-Canada YMCA and presented his experiences with the Youth and Government Program and the Model United Nations Program.  Jeff highlighted his participation in the YMCA Europe 2008 Festival in Prague attended by 6,000 participants from both the United States and European countries.  The goal of these programs is to develop leadership skills. Jeff is currently majoring in Political Science at the University of California, Berkley.
