 Opening

“God Bless America”

Tom Burrows, piano

Jack Dawson, vocalist

Wendy Smith, vocalist

Pledge of Allegiance
Chuck Gulick, Mel Wilson

Invocation
Melinda Thompson

The last opening of 2008 was atypical.  We had a rousing rendition of God Bless America thanks to newcomer, Wendy Smith.   The invocation asked us all to count our blessings and give thanks to the Christensen’s for a fine Christmas party this past Sunday.  Pledge of Allegiance had bouts of confusion as to who was to perform it.  More the merrier.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Choral singers from LCHS on Sunday.

Pat Anderson of LCF Chamber announces that Kiwanis Club of La Canada has been awarded as “Organization of the Year”.  This entitles the club to a free entry for next year’s Memorial Day parade.  Jack Dawson’s tin lizzie has been noted for its potential participation.

Oakmont C.C will cheer on members of the Tournament of Roses Royal Court on Jan. 15.  A special consideration as Tom Burrows’ granddaughter is a member of the court.

Matthew Regan is holding the Annual Toy Drive where two students at Franklin Elementary School in PUSD will be given special preference for the upcoming holidays.

Mike Leininger announces “Feed the Floaters” for volunteers on Dec. 30 at 7pm.  6:45pm start.

Mary Gant along with Clyde Hemphill mention “Under the Bridge” function for Tournament of Roses to be held Saturday, Dec 20 at 8:30.  The setup begins.

A reminder to all to say a prayer for Frosty’s wife, Fran, who has suffered a stroke.

Howard Backer reminds us all to continue to make donations to the Cal-Nev-Ha Kiwanis doctors.

THE PROGRAM

Caroline Craven is an adventurer with a camera on her side that has come a long way.  A graduate of Cal Poly Pomona, she took her degree in Agribusiness and started a firm, Craven & Associates, providing services in marketing for over twenty years.  A debilitating challenge from multiple sclerosis, where she was blinded for some time, has been overcome and now she puts her energy into photography and philanthropy.  She brought to our attention to the joys and tribulations of East Africa.  Poverty, disease, crime and all the ills that you can imagine are evident.  People continue on.  Schools are supported through sponsorships.  The kindness of others is evident where “Shepherd Academy, Shigona”, a school in Nairobi, continues to provide care and instruction to the young.  Photos of the children go along with photos of the wildlife.  A lion here, a wildebeest there and an orphaned elephant share the screen along.  And we can thank Ray Charles for a bit of inspiration and mention for his song, “ Heaven Help Us All.”  Her devotion to the needs of children, particularly those of Nairobi, shows.  For more information go to www.discovertheworld.org

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Cory Stevens has given $20 for “Happy Christmas and Merry New Year” to all

Clyde wishes to give a happy buck for a fabulous job on Cory’s part at the Christmas party

Happy bucks continue to pour in from Daryal and Linda over the well done efforts for the Christmas party.  The setup and cleanup get a special nod.

Glen is pleased that the invocations have been conducted without substitution for two years running.

Special happy buck from a guest who notes that a member by the name of Bill Wolfson had introduced the Happy Buck approach to the Presbyterian church in La Canada.  That method proved successful in raising funds consistently.

A happy buck from Ellie Wildermuth was chipped in.

Al Restivo threw in a happy buck for a get together held on behalf of Brian Fuller.  He also disclosed that my pin was missing that day.

A sad buck from myself for inviting Al to the aforementioned get together where he dutifully noted my missing pin and cost me a dollar.

Well, we can say hello to Bachy’s first great, granddaughter, Mayah.  She was born Tuesday, December 14 in Albuquerque weighing in at 7 lbs.  Already she is 20 ½ inches.  There was a suggestion on Bachy’s part to give her the name, Ludwiga.  That did not come to pass.

Fines:

I didn’t have my pin on at a function on Sunday where Al Restivo was in attendance.  True to form, Al took it upon himself to note this discrepancy on my part.
