The President’s Remarks….

 

President Carl Christensen told members that the Octoberfest Dinner, which celebrated the clubs 6oth anniversary, was most successful, though only a small number of members attended.  The dinner was held at the Thursday Club the previous Saturday.  A Proclamation from the California State Assembly, arranged by member Anthony Portantino, in honor of 60 years, was presented to the club.

In addition to the Proclamation, Kiwanis International sent a letter of congratulation to the club.

 

 

 

SPECIAL PRESENTATION 

 Diane DellaValle presented  Melinda Thompson with a proclamation from the California Assembly in honor of Melinda” past two years as a Board of Directors member .

 Diane also told members of the thanks received and the successful Challenge Air event that occurred the previous Saturday.  This was an “air adventure for challenged children”.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Nick Berkuta reminded members about the all -day TRAINING  meeting with  Nelson Tucker.  This will be held on November 1, 2008 , at Sportsman’s Lodge.

Flyers on the table, told members that the annual Holiday Party will be held on December 15, 2008.  More information to follow.

 Pam Feterl   reminded everyone that the Travel Adventure  Series will start on October 25 , 2008, at  Flintridge Prep Auditorium,  The first in series will take us on a wine tour of Australia, “Vines Down Under:  Wine Regions of Australia and New Zeeland”.

Pat Anderson announced the November 20 Chamber Mixer will be held at Gilmore Bank.

Pat also stated that December 4  will be the date to greet Santa and play in the snow.  This is the date for the beginning of the Festival of Lights.

Jennifer Berger reported that the Verdugo Hospital’s 10 per cent discount mammogram event would be held at the Triangle Store on October 22, 2008.

Mary Gant clarified the fact the Rose Queen and her Royal Court will not appear at our club this year.  Members can meet her and the Princesses at the Wine and Roses event, which will be held at the La Canada Country Club on November 4, 2008.

Norm Johnson announced that personnel from Flintridge Pharmacy will be at our meeting on October 29 to give flu shots . A table will be set up outside the door, and shots will be given after the meeting to all who want shots.  Shots are free.

Howard Baker reminded everyone that the donation cans on each table are for the Doctors Program.

Nick Berkuta announced that an Interclub meeting with the Glendale Club, and other local Clubs, is scheduled for Friday, October 24, at 12:00 , the Lions Club in Glendale,  Nick has reserved a table for our group.

Frosty Boyd asked that he be notified of any illnesses, members or family members, and he will contact them.

 

THE PROGRAM

Bill Watts
introduced the speaker from The Wildlife Way Station which is located in the Angeles Crest National Forest.  The Wildlife Way station 160A was founded by Nicollette Sheridan is a refuge for animals which have been abused or abandoned.  A PowerPoint presentation presented a history of the project, which illustrated the need for animal rehabilitation.  Many animals, birds and reptiles can be found at this station.  Animals once thought by buyers, to be pets, monkeys for example, grow to large and disorderly, and cannot be kept by private individuals,  wild animals that have had their claws removed can no longer defend themselves, animals used in medical experiments, are housed here.  Volunteers help to staff the station, and support comes through sponsorship and donations.  If you want to find out more about the Wildlife Way Station go to the following website:

Tom Burrows had a happy buck because Tom Slaughter solved one of his computer problem.

 

Fred Schooley gave a happy buck because Jack Dawson for his skills in welding

 

Jeb Long bet Howard Baker that  the Texas University would beat Missouri and retain its NUMBER 1 status in Football.  Jeb won and the bet cost him $100 which he donated to our Kiwanis Foundation.   No comment from Howard
