ANNOUNCEMENTS

Bill Scherkey made the following special announcement:

The Board of Directors has decided to put a special one-time assessment up to the membership for vote.  The assessment is needed to keep the club fiscally sound,

Kiwanis International has decided to collect dues on a one-time basis at the beginning of the fiscal year, Oct. 1st.  We collect dues on a monthly basis, so this means that the full collection of dues is not complete until the end of the year.  The club has to pay the dues in advance.  This is about $100 per member on the books as of Oct. 1st.  The assessment to collect a year’s worth of dues as of Oct 1st and then continue to collect on a monthly basis for the year.  This way will make the club financially sound.  To date, we have borrowed from the Foundation to stay in the black.  This is a bad practice.

This proposal requires a 2/3  vote of approval from members present at a regular meeting.  The vote is expected to be taken at the Oct 17 meeting.

                                                       -----------------------------------------

Linda Magarian announced an “OctoberFest” dinner party on October 9, in celebration of the club’s 60th anniversary

Mary Gant asked for help wrapping WGFT silent auction items, this coming Monday evening, 7:00, at the Gant house.

Pat Anderson announced the next Chamber mixer, sponsored by the city, on Sep 18 at the Sports Chalet.

Bill Scherkey said that he still had WGFT tickets, but that they were going fast.  Better hurry.  It’s on Sunday, Sep 14!!

Daryal Gant said he MEANT to announce the following:  On Oct 17, the annual DUCK RACE, sponsored by the Glendale club, will be held at Verdugo Park, in an artificial lake and river.  As in the past, club members will be given the opportunity to “adopt” ducks to be in the race.  Fifty percent of the adoption fees comes back to our club and has been a good source of revenue.  So, put some grease on your wallets and get ready for us to conduckt  a mass adoption.  We gotta get quackin’.  One duck, $5;  A Quackpack, 6 ducks. $25 ( the most popular choice).  John Landrum will “bill” you. First prize is $10,000 with the chance of winning another $1,000,000!  Second thru fifth prizes are $1,000 each.  Special drawing, for quack-packers only, for a $1,000 gas card.  (or a full tank, whichever comes first).

New Member Induction

Jennifer Berger (sp?) and Brian Fuller were inducted as new members.  Jennifer is with Verdugo Hills Hospital, while Brian is an information technology consultant (and candidate for assemblyman).

THE PROGRAM

The program was “Fall Risk Reduction.”  The slide show and talk was given by Laura Knowles who is an experienced physical therapist and currently the Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Verdugo Hills Hospital.  The presentation was well-received and there were many questions from members of the club who felt the presentation was directed personally to them!
