The Prez sez . . .

There are 2 clipboards circulating for 2 Installation Dinners.  The first one is for Division 3 Lt. Governor on Monday, September 15, the day after the Wine & Gourmet Food tasting event, at the LCF Country Club.  There are 17 members signed up so far and it would be fun to be the club with the most members in attendance and to give Richard Slavet the incoming Lt. Gov our support.  Our own club’s Installation Dinner for Carl Christensen is slated for Wednesday, September 24; it too, will be at the LCF Country Club.  Note:  There will be no noon Club meeting that day, we will be dark at Descanso.

Guests

President Diane introduced her friend and last week’s speaker, Joy Rittenhouse, who is a potential member; also, Diane’s Granddaughter Rilee Gerhard

Joy Rittenhouse         Rilee Gerhard

Gigi Schleuter introduced husband, Jim who was handed a membership application on his way out of our meeting.  Jim has been with us many times and would be an excellent candidate to be a Kiwanian.

Nick Berkuta introduced Jennifer Berger from the Verdugo Hospital and Jennifer just voted in as a member at our last Board meeting, her induction will be soon.

Al Restivo introduced returning guest, Brian Fuller who asked for a membership application!  Ed and Tom led us in ‘Hi Neighbor.’

Anniversaries

John Parady celebrated by donating a ½ Century Club.

Birthdays

Jim Akland said we had missed his birthday but there was a photo of a young couple in the local newspaper who celebrated a 50th Anniversary and because of the 2 events Jim joined the Century Club.

Not wearing their K pin: lots and lots including the Prez had to pay up on this one.

The Secret Greeter was told to keep his hands in his pockets and would you believe there were some who missed shaking hands with Clyde Hemphill?!  More $’s for the club.

There was a Frosty Challenge though this reporter missed the whole thing; I know I really missed some good ones.

Happy and Sad Bucks

Pat Anderson had a Happy and a Sad Buck, unfortunately there has been a man passing counterfeit $50 bills in town and neighboring communities but because of the Chamber’s Business Bulletin a sharp eyed employee at the Hallmark Store at the TJMaxx center recognized the offender who had selected a $5 item and tried to pay for it with a $50 bill, the clerk told the man that she was not allowed to accept any bill over $20 so he left the store.  The clerk followed and discovered the auto and the auto license but unfortunately the subject had gone to Conrad’s where he ate and paid for his meal with the bogus $50.  However, thanks to the clerk the Sheriff now has information that hopefully will lead to his arrest.

Daryal Gant had 2 Happy Bucks for new member Jennifer Berger and potential member Brian Fuller who was filling in his application at today’s meeting.

Mary Gant had 2 Sad Bucks because neither she nor Daryal have made their phone calls to invite their lists of possible members.

Howard Backer had a ‘Mixed Emotions Buck’ because he had received a check for $3900 for winning an out of the country lottery.

Ellie Wildermuth had several Happy Bucks because she has been enjoying her grandchildren’s visits, one at a time.

Club Announcements

Howard Backer asks for us all to drop a buck in the bucket on our tables to support the Pediatric Trauma Prevention program.

Jennifer Berger dropped in an invitation buck for us all to dine at the new Ocean View Bistro in support of the Verdugo Hills Hospital, mention the hospital and they will receive a percentage of your check.

Clyde Hemphill made a plea for a member to step forward to get ads for the Wine & Gourmet Food Tasting (W&GFT) program booklet.

Bill Scherkey announced that the tickets for the W&GFT were passed out to members and asked that if you are not going to purchase to please return unused ones to him.  These make great gifts for Birthdays, Anniversaries, to say Thank You, etc.

Tom Burrows announced the upcoming Talent Show on Wednesday, September 10th and ask all the Talented Kiwanians to sign up to be in it.

Mary Gant gave everyone the opportunity to donate to the Silent Auction of the W&GFT event.  Last week there were 4 or 5 who took forms to donate. For those of you who have season tickets to the theater, ball games, have a vacation home, give a trip, etc. please consider donating.

SLA (Sick, Lame and Ailing)

It was requested that we give Frosty Boyd a call, send a card, offer a prayer; as his dear, Fran is not well and Frosty is her care giver.  Dick DeGrey and Hal Thomas also enjoy hearing from us.

Program

April Kalsey

Nick Berkuta introduced April Kalsey of Earthquake Solutions who was the day’s speaker. April has impressive educational degrees from USC and UCLA; she is also Head of Emergency Preparedness for the LCF Chamber of Commerce.

April announced that this is the year of the ‘Great American Shake Out’ – all government agencies and businesses along the San Andreas Fault will participate in this event.   Homeowners should also participate.  April presented a slide show beginning with NY on 9/11 to point out how we are never truly prepared for disasters and how quickly they can occur.  These are life changing; everything changes from your home to retail to government to your transportation.  Your first concern if ‘where is my family.’  Then you may wonder how you will retrieve everyone or how you can join them.

Everyone should have a ‘disaster plan’ and identify the weaknesses of your plan whether in your business or home.   You should also have a drill keeping in mind that communications may be cut off.  Fires will be a definite concern and can emergency get to you and if a fire is involved, will there be water available to fight it.  April painted a very bleak picture of what we may face.  However, to get people’s attention the worst must be pointed out.

What other things you can do is to have emergency items and food and water stored where you, your family and your neighbors can have access to it.  The car also should have these items.

April’s company Earthquake Solutions can set you up.  Keep in mind these items are not inexpensive but also keep in mind what you would pay to keep everyone alive.  This is definitely a timely talk as we have all been warned that ‘the Big One is coming.’  This is not to scare you it is to prepare you because we are looking at a catastrophe not just a disaster.

April suggested we all participate by logging onto ww.ShakeOut.org and registering.

There were many questions and answers in the period following the presentation.
