Kiwanis Meeting Begins

Vice President Nick Berkuta presided over the meeting since both President Diane Della Valle and President-Elect Carl Christensen were representing our Club at the Annual Kiwanis International Convention in Florida.

Patriotic Song:

God Bless America was led by Ed Moulton and accompanied on the piano by Tom Burrows.

Flag Salute:

Sean Stathatos, a Boy Scout, led us in the Flag Salute

Inspirational:

Norm Johnson gave us a wonderful inspiration.

Call to Order:

Nick thanked, Reverend Skip Lindeman, Pastor of Church of The Lighted Window, for allowing our club to hold the meeting in their church hall today.  Reverend Skip, in good humor, suggested we all leave a $10.00 tip on the tables.  He also thanked Pat Anderson for buying his lunch.

Introduction of Guests:

Jack Dawson introduced our newest member, Harv Nelson who became a member two weeks ago.

Due to a full program this week, Harv will be inducted next week.  Nick Berkuta introduced Jennifer Berger who is Director of Annual Giving at Verdugo Hills Hospital.

Paul Westmoreland introduced Corey Stevens, a recent retiree from JPL, who is one of our most recent new members and has just filled out her form.   Welcome Harv, Jennifer and Corey!

Welcome Back Song:

Ed Mouton led us all in song as we welcomed back Frank and Violet Ragazzi.  Frank and Violet’s great niece, Nicole Morrison, was one of the Girl Scouts being honored today.

Master of the Cash Box:

    John Landrum

Anniversaries and Birthdays:

Pat Flynn’s birthday was on June, 24th.  He contributed the second half to being part of the Century Club.

Nick gave recognition to Karl Johnson whose anniversary is on June 26thKarl Johnson joined the Century Club last week in celebration of both his birthday and anniversary which are both in June.

Fines:

Fines were imposed on any member who was not wearing their Kiwanis Pin to the meeting today or who did not shake the hand of our secret greeter,  Ken Lowe.

 Happy/Sad Bucks:

Frank and Violet Ragazzi both gave Happy Bucks for being able to be at the meeting today.  They have been away for a while and were delighted to be back.

Pat Anderson gave a happy buck for the wonderful job that Jennifer Berger did this morning in the ribbon cutting for the new Mammography Unit at Verdugo Hills Hospital.

Pat also gave a happy buck because the Church of the Lighted Window voted to go back to its original name.  The new name, which dates back to 1897, will be the La Cañada Congregational Church.  Pat also gave a happy buck for the upcoming ribbon cutting event for the new Sport Chalet Store which will be held on Friday, August 8th at 9 am.  Anyone interested in attending the ribbon cutting needs to call Pat Anderson so that she can put your name on the list.

Howard  Backer gave a happy buck because Frank and Violet Ragazzi attended the Kiwanis Meeting today.  Howard hopes that they will become faithful attendees again.

Emilita Bituin gave five happy bucks for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Clyde Hemphill gave a happy buck because our  meeting came together so well.  Great facility and Nick is doing a great job.

Elizabeth Georgeon gave a happy buck because she went up to Santa Cruz for her son and daughter-in-laws annual Crawfish Boil.  Elizabeth’s daughter-in-law is from Louisiana and they get about 300 pounds of Crawfish.  The temperature in Santa Cruz was around 105 degrees and they experienced rain, thunder, lightening and even some hail.  It felt as if they were in Louisiana having their Crawfish Boil.

Helena Harrison gave a happy buck for the cooler weather.  Helena gave a second happy buck because she was happy that she went to our regular Descanso Meeting place this morning because she bumped into a fellow Kiwanian and was able to direct the member to where we were having the meeting today.

Reverend Skip Lindeman gave five happy bucks because of the generosity that he saw in so many people giving money for the happy/sad bucks.

Mary Ann Berkuta gave one happy buck because her husband, Nick, is doing such a good job as acting president today and one happy buck because she is the First Lady for a day.

Dinuba Report:

Paul Westmoreland gave happy bucks for the success of the Soap Box Derby, the wonderful coverage of the event in the Valley Sun and for John Torrey who photographed the event and provided the photos to the newspaper.  Paul then gave a happy buck for the article written in the Dinuba Signal Newspaper about the Mayor of Dinuba and his wife riding in our Fiesta Days Parade.

Daryal Gant gave a sad buck for what is now happening in Dinuba, California.  Dinuba advertises that there are 32 churches in town and no bars.  Two property owners in downtown Dinuba want to open up a Sports Bar and nightclub.  Daryal sent a letter to the editor of the Dinuba Signal Newspaper telling them what he thinks of that idea.  He would not tell us exactly what he wrote but if his letter gets published, he will let us know!

Jack Dawson gave a buck because he is tired of hearing about Dinuba.  He referred to a recent article in a magazine that showed all the areas around Fresno where you could buy fresh summer fruit and there was no mention of Dinuba as a place to go.

Club Announcements:

Pat Anderson announced that the next Chamber’s Mixer will be held on July 17th at LeeAnn’s Place.  There is no mixer in August.  The mixer in September will be on the 18th in Olberz Park and will be hosted by the City of La Cañada Flintridge.  The park does not exist as of today but will be the park in the new town center.  The Town Center’s grand opening will be on Labor Day Weekend.

Megan Nordvedt announced that she put two flyers on the tables.  One flyer is for possible Gold Award or Eagle Scout Projects that can be done at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge.  The second flyer is regarding the Angeles Forest Institute which is available for students entering 10th-12th grade.

Tom Burrows announced that our annual Talent Show will be on the 10th of September.  Anyone interested in being in the Talent Show, please contact Tom Burrows.

Joel Smith announced that our Summer Social is scheduled for July 27th and there is a sign up sheet going around.

Daryal Gant announced that Reverend Skip Lindeman is a natural born Kiwanian.  Skip was very nice to loan us his facility and he made a donation to our club and therefore Daryal suggested that Nick give him a membership application.  Skip announced that he is an interim pastor although he has been here for five and one half years.  He said he should not join Kiwanis because he may be gone in another year. Nick said he knew how Daryal thinks and that Kiwanis is international and that he could just transfer his membership to another club.  No further comment was made from Skip.

Frosty Boyd brought us up to date on the sick, lame and ailing members.  Dick DeGrey’s wife is about the same.  Dick does appreciate phone calls.  Hal Thomas also appreciates any phone calls.  Frosty commented that Jim Ackland looks good.  Call Frosty if you know of anyone who is not doing well.

The Program:

Today we honored the commitment and hard work to achieve the top awards in scouting by the youth in our community.

Ken Lowe led us in our annual Scout Recognition Day.  We had seven Eagle Scouts and three Gold Award participants attending.  Each scout was introduced and then they introduced their parents.  The Scout Leaders were introduced and each gave a brief overview of what their particular troop is doing.  Dave Cardenas, Field Director for the San Gabriel Valley Council gave an informative overview about the Boy Scout Program.

Dave Cardenas

Anne Tryba, a former Service Unit Manager for the Girl Scouts and this year’s Event Director for the Gold, Silver and Bronze ceremony gave us an informative overview about the Girl Scout Program.  Each scout then told us about the project they worked on to obtain their Eagle Scout Rank or Gold Award.

The Boy Scouts in attendance were: Dan Stathatos, Sean Stathatos, Brian Marsh, Chris Chafin, Eric Andersen, Daniel Jessee, and Eric Shaw.  The Girl Scouts in attendance were Nicole Morrison, Alison Roybal and Daniela Dykes.

The scouts who attended today’s meeting were only a fraction of those who received this ultimate award in scouting.  We extend our congratulations to these scouts and their parents.

Literacy Program Update

Linda Magarian & Harriet Hammons represent our club’s Literacy Program at Union Avenue Elementary School by presenting students with Liberacy Achievement awards.

Closing:

Nick thanked the House Committee, Mel Wilson, Chuck Gulick and Clyde Hemphill, for “going the extra mile” with all the extra work needed due to our alternate meeting site.  Nick also thanked our music crew, Ed and Tom who then led us in our closing song, Hail Kiwanis.
