The Prez sez . . .

Carl Christensen presided over the meeting since Diane was out of town.  Carl reminded the members that next week’s meeting will be held at the Church of The Lighted Window.

 

Opening Song: 

God Bless America was led by Ed Moulton and accompanied on the piano by Tom Burrows.

 

Flag Salute: 

Paul Bobzin led us in the Flag Salute.

 

Inspiration: 

Bachy gave us a very inspirational prayer.

 

INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS:

Bea Cirar introduced her guest, Doris Swink.

Paul Westmoreland introduced his guest, Corey Stevens, who has turned in her application for membership.

WELCOME BACK SONG:

The members all joined in song to welcome back, Paul Bobzin, Jeb Long and Jim Edwards.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION:

Jim Reynolds announced to the members that Tom Stafford has submitted his resignation for retirement from the club.   Tom has been a faithful member since 1995. A standing ovation was given in Tom’s honor.  He will surely be missed by all!

SPECIAL PRESENTATION

Clyde Hemphill gave a report on the Soap Box Derby that was held this past weekend.  Clyde presented Mary Gant with a plaque and photos of her participation as a VIP Racer.  Way to go Mary!!

INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBER:  

Daryal Gant and Linda Magarian assisted in the induction of our 8th newest member this year, Rolando Morales.  Rolando is sponsored by Diane Della Valle.  Rolando gave us a brief overview of himself.  Daryal and Linda read him a condensed version of the Kiwanis Objectives.  Rolando was presented his Kiwanis Club Pin, his temporary badge, the club directory and a list of requirements that he will need to complete before he is given his permanent badge.  Ed Moulton led the members in singing, “You’re In Kiwanis Now” and then we all gave three cheers for Rolando.

 

Linda Magarian gave Rhoda Backer her Super Star of Requirements needed to be completed before she is presented her permanent badge.  

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Joel Smith announced that the Super Summer Soiree will be held on Sunday, July 27th from 4 PM to 7 PM at Bill Watts’ home.   Flyers regarding this upcoming event were distributed on the tables for members to take home.  A sign up sheet for this event was passed around.  You may also RSVP to Joel Smith by email or phone.

Howard Backer reminded us to contribute to the Kiwanis “Kid’s Can”.  Soft money is always appreciated.

Linda Magarian reminded us that at Union Avenue Elementary School on Thursday, June 19, 2008, reading awards will be given to those students who have excelled in their participation in the Literacy Program.  A sign up sheet was passed around for anyone interested in attending the awards assembly.

Pat Anderson announced she saw our city’s Memorial Day Parade on video and that the quality this year is as good as the Rose Parade.  Pat will give more information on when we can view the parade on Charter Cable once she receives the broadcast date.  Pat also informed us of two upcoming Chamber Mixers.  One will be held at the Valley Sun on Thursday, June 19, 2008 and the second one will be at LeeAnn’s Place on July 17th.

Nick Berkuta announced that Linda Magarian presented a Habitat for Humanity program today at the AM Kiwanis group.  Linda had four of their members sign up to assist in the construction efforts by our club at the Glendale Build.  Nick announced that Jim Edwards will be helping at the site tomorrow and anyone interested in helping, to contact Nick.

Frosty Boyd brought us up to date on the sick, lame and ailing members.

FINES:

Fines were imposed on any member who was not wearing their Kiwanis Pin to the meeting today or who did not shake the hand of our secret greeter, Jim Reynolds.

 

ANNIVERSARIES AND BIRTHDAYS:

Karl Johnson joined the Century Club today by combining his birthday and wedding anniversary.

 

HAPPY / SAD BUCKS:

Carl Christensen gave a happy buck for a good inner club meeting yesterday at the Hollywood Los Feliz Club.

 

Jeb Long gave a sad buck for the Lakers.

Ellie Wildermuth gave two happy bucks for her two visits with two sets of grandchildren.

Mary Gant gave two happy bucks.  One was for her grandson, Omar, who graduated from 8th grade today at LCHS, and one for her and Daryal surviving sitting in the hot sun during the graduation ceremony.

Clyde Hemphill gave a sad buck because several bales of hay were stolen from the Soap Box Derby Event.

Helena Harrison gave a sad buck for Tom Stafford retiring from Kiwanis.

 

FIFTY-FIFTY DRAWING: 

Norm Johnson was the winner of the drawing.

THE PROGRAM

The program for this week was three of our members giving their craft talks.  Carl Christensen led with his updated craft talk.  The purpose for Carl doing this was to illustrate to new members what should be included in their presentation.    

Megan Nordvedt and Rhoda Backer presented their required craft talks to the members. 

Megan told the members how she was born on July 4th , grew up in La Cañada and graduated from LCHS.  She shared with us about her college and work experiences.  Megan is presently the Executive Director of the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge.    Megan got married last summer and she and her husband are expecting a daughter in October. 

Rhoda was born at her family’s home in Glendale and attended Glendale Schools and graduated from Glendale High School.  Rhoda shared with us how she and Howard met and about their courtship.  Their blended family consists of eight children, 13 grandchildren and one great grandson.  Rhoda has many hobbies and plays musical instruments for her own pleasure.  She has a large collection of several unusual instruments.

 

CLOSINGEd Moulton led the members in singing Come On Kiwanis.  He was accompanied on the piano by Tom Burrows.
