Daryal and Mary

The La Cañadan of the Year Awards Ceremony

Mary Gant was honored as the La Cañadan of the Year for her many successful volunteer achievements in the community. Local resident Sunder Ramani served as Emcee, kept the pace light and fast, and reminded us that Mary Gant is one of those who “gives without remembering and takes without forgetting”. Karl Johnson and Carl Christensen did a tag-team biography on her. Husband Daryal Gant claimed to be her last resort when she married him although she claimed later he was her first resort. Pat Anderson called her the “Can Can Girl” because she always can. Daughter Brenda Gant talked about a mother who was a model for her of selflessness, resourcefulness, sociability, and high energy (and for stealing cars, or did I hear correctly?). To Joel Smith she was a “Golden Sun” who produced enough energy to be useful and lasted long enough to get things done.

Presentations of awards and certificates abounded: Mayor Steve DelGuercio for the City of La Cañada Flintridge, Carlos Cortez for Congressman David Drier, Sunder for Congressman Adam Schiff, Jacquiline Corby for Senator Jack Scott, Bill Hacket for Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, Sunder filled in for Rita Hadjimadoukian for County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, Superintendent Jim Stratton for the local schools, Stephanie English for the County Fire Department, Sheriff Dave Silversparre for the County Sheriff’s Office, Frank Beyt for the Crescenta Valley Town Council, Pat Anderson for the local Chamber of Commerce, Sue Beatty for the local Tournament of Roses Association, Malak Peterman for the local Leisure Club, Kim Beattie for the local YMCA, and, of course, Diane DellaValle who presented the La Cañadan of the Year for the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada .
