We will be honoring Mary Gant, the La Cañadan of the Year, at our luncheon meeting on May 7.  Because of the anticipated attendees we will be starting our meeting at 11:30am.  Please plan to arrive a little before 11:30am.

Clyde Hemphill, recipient of the Les Tupper Award, will be honored at 7pm, Monday, May 12, at von Karman Auditorium at JPL.  The public is invited.

The Prez introduced Membership Acquisition co-chairs, Linda Magarian and Daryal Gant, who gave us an up-date on the membership drive.   Linda began by reviewing the groups that have invited guests, converted guests to members, and those groups who have not.  Most recently Howard Backer brought his wife, Rhoda, who turned in her New Member Application.  Howard got a prize from Linda’s grab-bag.  Linda also gave new members Mary Ann Berkuta, Helena Harrison, Francis Boyd, Emilita Bituin, Susanne Passantino and Don Voss (some new members not present) Super Stars.  As the new members complete items on the way to earning their Permanent Badges (craft talks, attend a board meeting, get 60% of members signature, etc…) they will speak to Ellie Wildermuth who will verify their accomplishment and snip off the appropriate the star point.  When they have all of their star points clipped off they will earn 10 points and be on their way to a special prize.  Good luck to all the new members!!

Daryal reminded everyone that the new Kiwanis International brochures have been delivered, and encouraged everyone to pick some up and give them to prospective members.  Last but not least, Daryal reminded one and all to be ready for the wet “T” shirt contest to be held next week.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ken Lowe took the La Cañada High School Key Clubbers to the convention in Sacramento.  The bus trip was a noisy six hours up and six hours back.  The convention installed the new Lieutenant Governor who is from the LCHS Key Club.

Carl Christensen reminded us about the Interclub scheduled with Jewel City who holds their meetings at Clancy’s in Glendale.  Carl also announced the La Cañadan of the Year luncheon to honor Mary Gant.  The luncheon will be on MAY 7th, and all who plan to attend should plan on being their by 11:30am.

Clyde Hemphill announced the free shredding in Pasadena.  Check with Clyde for the details. Clyde also announced that we will not be able to hold our annual pet clinic.  The organization that provides the free vaccine is unable to do it this year.

Pam Feterl announced the Travel Adventure to Morocco this Saturday, April 26, 2008.  This is the last one this season, and should be a good one.

Howard Backer reminded everyone to put what they can in the cans on each table to support the pediatric trauma training program.

Nick Berkuta will be heading up a group to go down and work on the Habitat housing project in Glendale.  This week we will be able to swing a hammer instead of a shovel.

Joel Smith announced that the Community Center is looking for cuttings from native succulents for the new garden project.

Frosty’s SLA report, as follows: Dick DeGrey is coming along slowly. Hal Thomas is visiting his wife on a daily basis.

Clyde Hemphill discovered that we have a second bar-be-cue, and wonders where it came from. It is registered to our club?

THE PROGRAM

Nick Berkuta introduced the speaker, Amy Johnson, who presented a very interesting program on Canine Companions for Independence.  They train special dogs to assist disabled children and adults as well.  The organization trains dogs as Service Dogs, Skilled Companion, Hearing Dogs, and Facility Dogs.  This is a great program, and one we should consider supporting.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Ellie Wildermuth had a Sad Buck for the passing of Tom Perry.  Tom was a member of the AM Club.  The funeral for Tom will be at the La Cañada Presbyterian Church on Monday, May 5, at 2pm.  Ellie had a very Happy Buck for Jack Dawson who repaired her car.

Paul Westmoreland had two Happy Bucks.  One for the trip he just got back from, and another thanking Jeb and others for taking pictures in his absence.

Daryal Gant had a Happy Buck for his granddaughter who passed her driving test on the second try.

Tom Slaughter had a Happy Buck for the lovely planters going in down the middle of Foothill Blvd.  This is a great improvement for the City of LCF.

Mary Gant had a Happy Buck for not disqualifying Granddaughter, Summer, from taking her driving test.  It seems that she was holding Summer’s space in line, and was discovered by one of the examiners.  Mary was able to talk her way out of the predicament.

Frosty’s Challenge was won by Bill Watts with a Bar Joke.  Frosty did have a good cat in the racket.
